However, a chilling text message received on the phone of student’s father just before his death has added mystery to the incident. Nishank Rathore’s father received a text which read: “ Guztakh-e-Nabi ki Ek hi Saja, Sar Tan se Juda”. Notably, this is the same slogan which was chanted by the killers who beheaded a tailor in Rajasthan’s Udaipur in broad daylight last month and shot a video of the heinous crime. Screenshots of chat between the father and unidentified person is viral on social media. Another text received on Umashankar Rathore’s phone read: “Rathor Sahab, bhut bahadur tha apka beta”, which can be roughly translated into “Rathore sir, your son was very brave". ‘Sar Tan Se Juda’ Slogans Raised During Moharram Procession In Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur, Four Arrested

Less than 500 metres from the Meerganj Police Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district, miscreants raised beheading slogans during a Moharram procession on 10 August. After the video went viral on social media evoking strong reactions, the Jaunpur Police said on Twitter that they had arrested four people. Moharram is an event of mourning for Muslims. However, in recent years, the occasion has been used by miscreants from the community to terrorise other communities through display of swords and sticks and playing of provocative songs. Wednesday was the tenth day of the first month of the Islamic calendar, observed as Ashura. The month itself is called Moharram. People belonging to the Muslim community mourn for Hussain, grandson of the founder of Islam and hold processions carrying tajiya on the streets. The processions have traditionally comprised people walking barefoot, carrying sticks and swords in their hands which they use for beating their chests and back while chanting "Ya Hussain". However, the processions now feature DJ trucks blaring loud music, which is often communally provocative. For instance, a video that went viral on the social media earlier this year from a 2018 Moharram procession in Khargone area of Madhya Pradesh showed a DJ playing the song, ‘ Kar denge tadi paar, bulaun kya Ali ko…Is baar mein mit jayega har baar ka jhagda..”. The participants danced on these lyrics while brandishing swords and pistols outside a Hindu temple. The video was upload...

Across India, religious fervour sparked clashes as Islamists targeted Ram Navami processions passing through Muslim-majority areas. Cities and towns from Vadodara in Gujarat to Howrah in West Bengal and Mumbai to Sambhaji Nagar were affected. The violence was essentially fueled by radical Islamic extremism. As investigations are progressing in each of the individual cases, attempts were being made to insinuate that Jai Shri Ram chants by Hindus participating in the procession were the root cause of the incidents in most of the cases. The slogan of Jai Shri Ram as invoked by the Hindutva brigade, is no longer a salutation to Lord Ram, but a communal war cry to intimidate the minorities— Prashant Bhushan (@pbhushan1) Many liberals in media and politics have presented this sacred chant of Hindus as a ‘war cry’ time and again. However, the Islamist slogan of ‘Sar Tan Se...
