• Additional Chief Secretary, Excise, Uttar Pradesh, Sanjay Bhoosreddy, IAS, initiated an oath-taking ceremony for school and college students of the state on 11 August. • This ceremony was part of the week-long celebrations for the completion of 75 years of India’s Independence. • Over 75 lakh students took an oath to stay away from drugs in their morning assemblies and also e-signed on a government website confirming the pledge. In line with the central government’s vision for a ‘Drug-Free India’, the UP Excise Department along with the Narcotics Control Bureau launched an online e-pledge campaign to sensitize school children on the adverse effects of drugs. On the morning of 11 August, all schools and colleges across the state took an oath to fight off the urge to do drugs in their morning assemblies, and later e-signed on a government website that they took the pledge to stay drug-free all their life. Once they signed, they received a certificate, which they could frame and keep with them forever. TOWARDS DRUG-FREE INDIA The week-long celebrations for the completion of India’s 75 years of Independence, which began on 11 th August, brought around the biggest Anti-Drug campaign that the country has seen – ‘Say Yes to Life and No to Drugs’, to curb the menace of drugs among youngsters and make India drug-free. "No to every type of drug use. It is as simple as that," Pope Francis said Friday during an audience with about 450 representatives of national and international drug enforcement agencies. The representatives, who came from 129 countries, participated in the International Drug Enforcement Conference June 17-19 in Rome. The annual conference, initiated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency in 1983, is designed to help law enforcement officials coordinate anti-drug policies and promote international cooperation in fighting the organized crime of drug trafficking. Pope Francis said he would not be surprised if international drug trafficking leads the world in income production, and "this is sad." Even worse, he said, too many young people around the world never get a job offer, but frequently get offered drugs. "The lives of more and more young people and adolescents are in danger," he said. "Let me state this is in the clearest terms possible: The problem of drug use is not solved with drugs," he said. "Drug addiction is an evil, and with evil there can be no yielding or compromise."
