Meet the Harvard Ornithology Professor Biking Across the Country

As a professor and curator of ornithology at Harvard University, Scott Edwards usually spends his summers immersed in conferences, museum collections, fieldwork, and laboratories. He stays busy investigating a wide array of species and subjects, including But this year, when COVID-19 halted most scientific endeavors and closed campuses across the United States, Edwards decided to attempt his dream of cycling from the Atlantic to Pacific. Mapping an approximate route, south of the Great Lakes then due west, he planned to cruise along country roads and sleep at campgrounds, expecting both to be empty enough for social distancing. Two weeks before his departure, though, people nationwide took to the streets to protest the killing of George Floyd by a police officer, police brutality, and systemic racial injustice. On the same day as Floyd’s death, May 25, a viral video of a racist encounter in Central Park involving a Black birder and white woman further fanned the flames of outrage. As a result of that incident, a group of Black birders and naturalists launched When Edwards learned about Black Birders Week, he created a Twitter account to participate. Then on June 6 he ceremoniously dipped his wheel in the sea off Massachusetts and started pedaling. A few days in, Edwards fixed Black Lives Matter signs to his bike and began documenting the journey on Twitter. Audubon magazine talked to Edwards 10 days into the trip, in rural New York and about 80 miles east of Lake Erie. He ...

A collision of talent and opportunity put Scott Edwards on stage with Stevie Wonder in 1970. After the gig, he became Stevie's bass player, a position he held until 1973 when he turned his talents to session work. As a first-call Los Angeles studio pro, he found himself laying grooves for Hall & Oates, Donna Summer, Glen Campbell and Smokey Robinson. Session work is anonymous by design, which keeps the spotlight on the artists. That's why it was a real treat to speak with Scott, who has remarkable recall of the seminal music he played thanks to his method: humming basslines in his head before they hit his fingers. He shared some of his unique insights on playing with Stevie Wonder and crafting the hits as a session player. Carl Wiser (Songfacts): Where are you located, Scott? Scott Edwards: I live in Long Beach, California. Songfacts: Oh, that's gotta be nice. Edwards: Yeah. Kind of down by the water. The only thing is sometimes it gets foggy because of the water coming in. But it's about 20 miles south of LA proper. Songfacts: Nice. How did you get into the bass? Edwards: Actually, I started playing trombone when I was probably five or six years old. I did the elementary school thing and then high school. I'm originally from Atlanta, Georgia, and back then a lot of the groups were based on the Stax sound, like Memphis Horns and all that kind of stuff. And Otis Redding. So they needed horn players. But then they started downsizing the size of the horn section to where some...

Biden rolls out 2 new red

By 06/07/2023 06:00 AM EDT • • • • Link Copied • • • • President Joe Biden is rolling out two new red-state picks for the federal bench — both of whom are expected to clear a critical political hurdle in the Senate. Biden’s two nominees are both set to fill judicial vacancies in Louisiana: Jerry Edwards, Jr. is a top federal prosecutor in the state, according to a forthcoming White House announcement that POLITICO reviewed, while Brandon Scott Long is a former deputy chief of staff to FBI Director Chris Wray. Both picks must go through the Senate tradition known as the blue slip, which affords home-state senators effective veto power over federal district court nominees they disapprove of. That puts Biden’s judicial picks in red states in limbo unless they win the sign-off of the Republican senators who represent those states. One red-state Biden judicial nominee But Wednesday’s nominees don’t appear in peril: Both Louisiana senators are expected to secure blue slips for confirmation hearings, according to a person familiar with the nomination process who was granted anonymity to discuss private deliberations. But there is some controversy: In a letter sent Wednesday to the White House, nine top Congressional Black Caucus Democrats called on Biden to withdraw the two nominees, saying the group had not been properly consulted. “The process used to make these selections makes it impossible to support the nominations at this time,” the members wrote. “Our objection is not to ...

Scott Edwards, top disco bass player and much more

Now most of the stuff he played on is not really my kind of music, for example he played bass on "I Will survive" but he's an excellent player and has played on a boatload of #1 hits and played with the best. I had never heard of him before today but found out about him while looking for who played bass on "I Will Survive" as I had always noticed what a great bass line is in that tune, in fact always noticed how many rhythm sections were great during the disco era. He was one of the top disco players, played on "Bad Girls" and "Hot Stuff", Donna summer, but has also done a lot of other stuff like he played on "Rhinestone Cowboy"- Glen Campbell and he even did a few T Rex tunes so you know he's versatile. Here's his website which contains a lot of information and links, there's even a link there for a documentary for the making of "I will survive" but he played on a lot of other well known tunes besides that one. He's a career P bass player as far as I can tell.
