Ride Review: The Royal Enfield Scram 411 Is The Safest Motorcycle I’ve Ever Ridden

Simple, affordable, reliable and fun, the Scram 411 is a great fit for riders looking to start out - ... [+] or just get back into the sport. William Roberson It was a stretch of cold, often wet weeks riding around Portland on Royal Enfield’s Scram 411, and despite the gloom, it’s been an enjoyable motorcycle on many levels. But it’s also an unusual motorcycle, especially given the competition. The Scram 411 is a close cousin to the popular Himalayan dual-sport adventure bike (both below) from India-based motorcycle maker Royal Enfield, which began life in England in 1901, and after folding in the U.K. decades ago, soldiered on in India until it was bought and modernized by the Eicher Group/ The Scram - short for “Scrambler,” which is a street bike with light off-road capabilities - is a definite return-to-roots type of motorcycle that many riders have been asking for. It’s basic yet technically sophisticated at the same time, with fuel injection, ABS brakes, a small LCD info-panel inset in the big round (and digitally driven) speedo and a second “Tripper” pod for GPS pointers (below) when wirelessly tied to the robust Royal Enfield app. But there are no ride modes, adjustable levers, cruise control or other luxuries. Speedo includes a lot of info including GPI and a gas gauge but no tach; small Tripper pod give TBT ... [+] GPS prompts. William Roberson Fancy it isn’t, but it is definitely affordable and undeniably stylish. My review bike was painted in a two-tone shiny me...

2023 Royal Enfield Scram 411 Test [First Ride In Wisconsin]

Over the years, there has been the philosophy in the motorcycle industry that “more is better.” The proof of that has been particularly noticeable in the upward trends toward ever-greater horsepower, and more technical complexity in terms of electronics—ride modes, wheelie control, traction control, you name it. In the design of the new 2023 Royal Enfield Scram 411, the script has been flipped to read, “Less is more.” That makes sense, given the target market and purpose the Scram is designed for. Perhaps Royal Enfield Americas Region President and Business Head Krishnan Ramaswamy summed it up best when he said, “We focused on building a motorcycle that gives you everything you need and nothing you don’t. We wanted to make the Scram accessible in terms of light weight, usable power, reliability, ease of operation, and affordable purchase price.” At the launch event for the 2023 Royal Scram 411, I put that philosophy and the resulting product to the test. The event started at the Hard braking in city traffic on a couple of occasions created no problems and no skids. Braking is from ByBre—a subsidiary of Brembo—and features dual-channel ABS and steel-braided lines. The braking system teams up with the Ceat dual-purpose tread tires to provide straight, stable, swift stops every time. Cornering and braking are equally predictable, even on wet pavement. Unlike the From Milwaukee, the route took us northwest out of the city into the scenic farmland of the Kettle Moraine region. ...

A capable street scrambler with the heart of an adventure motorcycle, meet the Royal Enfield Scram 411. In Royal Enfield’s words, the Scram 411 is “an engaging, accessible and capable street scrambler, with the heart of an adventure motorcycle.” And it literally does have the 411 cc heart of Royal Enfield’s Himalayan ADV bike, along with its frame, tank, rear wheel, and exhaust. Unlike most production scramblers, the Scram 411 has a low pipe. Royal Enfield photo. Our man The Scram gets these side panels where the Himalayan had crash guards. Royal Enfield photo. "[ADV-crossover] is a brand-new subcategory, created when legit ADV capability was crossbred with scrambler playfulness and accessibility,” said Mark Wells, Chief of Design at Royal Enfield. At the very least, the single-cylinder scrambler is a brand-new subcategory for Royal Enfield, and one that is aimed at urban markets. “ADVs are too specialized for the city, [but] most road bikes are too soft,” Wells said. The biggest changes are aesthetic. There’s a new one-piece seat, altered fenders, different tires, and a revised headlight with a shroud reaching up to the speedometer. The Scram 411 drops the Himalayan’s cargo rack, high fender, windscreen, and crash guards, although it features two new panels flanking the tank that might save some scuffs. (They’re probably more for style than protection.) Total weight is down to a claimed 408 pounds (wet), versus 439 pounds for the Himalayan. All the focus on creating an “A...

2023 Royal Enfield Scram 411 First Ride Review

“What is a Scrambler?” That question was posed to me recently, and my answer was probably a bit rambling since I was figuring it out as I was speaking. What it boiled down to, eventually, was: a Scrambler is a play bike. Something fun, equally willing to shred dirt as it is to hop curbs and navigate the urban jungle. Line that definition up to Royal Enfield’s latest offering, the Himalayan-based Scram 411, and you’ll find a nearly perfect fit. Perhaps the biggest reason the Scram 411 is so true to my definition is that, unlike many of today’s “Scramblers,” the Scram was derived directly from an ADV Bike rather than a Street Bike. That bike, the Himalayan, also happens to have uniquely Scrambler-ready DNA: it’s purpose-built to be ridden in some pretty harsh environments, it’s relatively lightweight, accessible and easy to ride. Transforming the Himalayan into the Scram 411 didn’t require huge feats of engineering, and in fact Royal Enfield took inspiration from bike builds they’ve seen from Himalayan owners around the world. The Scram 411’s engine, 5-speed gearbox, chassis, rear 7.1 in-travel monoshock, and brakes are all Himalayan—with one major change being that the ABS on the Scram cannot be disabled. Other notable differences that make the Scram more Scrambler than Adventure Bike include a 19-inch front wheel and slightly shorter front suspension travel (7.1 in compared to 7.9 in), which not only position the rider a bit more forward but also decrease the rake, and con...

The 2023 Royal Enfield Scram 411 is a new scrambler variant of the Himalayan. Photos courtesy Royal Enfield. Anytime you have a hit on your hands the way voila, a new variation is born. Many times, however, as with blockbuster movies, sequels fail to capture the success of the original. With the The Empire Strikes Back or a forgettable flop like Ghostbusters II? The new scrambler-style Scram 411 and the Himalayan share the same frame and air-cooled 411cc Single with SOHC and two valves. The 4-gallon fuel tank is also the same, but the Himalayan’s two-piece seat has been swapped for one of a singular design. More importantly, the 21-inch front wheel of the Himalayan was replaced with a more street friendly 19-incher on the Scram. Related Story: The instrument cluster was also downsized, with the Himalayan’s digital compass and tachometer being omitted on the Scram, while the speedo was replaced with a different version that includes a clock, dual tripmeters, an odometer, and a gear-position indicator. Our test bikes were outfitted with Royal Enfield’s Tripper navigation unit, but according to company reps, supply-chain issues have prevented the Tripper from being offered as standard equipment. Instead, it will be an accessory available sometime in the future. Gone as well are the Himalayan’s windscreen and front rack, forcing Enfield designers to clean up the bike’s exposed cockpit, which they did by way of a cast metal headlight nacelle. Affixed to the mounting points on t...
