It is believed that Anarkali was basically from Iran and came to Lahore with a traders’ caravan. The first historical mention of Anarkali is found in the travelogue of the British tourist and trader, William Finch, According to him Anarkali was one of the wives of Emperor Akbar and the mother of his son Danial Shah.

Anarkali was a beautiful and a favourite concubine of Akbar, but his inordinate love for her made a couple of other concubines jealous. Apparently, when Akbar was on a visit to the Deccan, Anarkali fell ill and died, and the other two concubines committed suicide to escape the emperor’s wrath.

There is a dance performance by Anarkali at Akbar’s court, an incident having its parallel in Mālavikāgnimitra. Another important aspect of this dance scene is the introduction of Bharatanatyam style of dance in Akbar’s court through Puņdarika’s performance, which serves to be another instance of the synthesis of cultures.
