Selfiee Movie Review: Akshay Kumar

By Zinia Bandyopadhyay: At this point, it is safe to say that most in the audience are done with remakes. It has been a continuing season of remaking not just some super hit regional films, but Bollywood is now buying rights of foreign language films as well. Most times, the attempt goes futile as seldom do remakes manage to match up to the original. Just last week, Kartik Aaryan hit the screens with his film Shehzada, the remake of Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo and the disappointment was just as massive as the hype the film had generated. Now, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi have teamed up for the remake of the Malayalam film, Driving Licence. Titled Selfiee, this one has actually managed to capture the essence of the original and is one that can be termed a ‘good remake’. Much of the credit actually goes to Raj Mehta, who was able to take the original and mould it perfectly to suit the sensibilities of the Hindi film audience. What’s even better is that the director, who had collaborated with Akshay in Good Newwz, has been able to tap into his comic timings and make Vijay Kumar a shadow of how Akshay Kumar is. So, you see a character who is just like how fans see Khiladi Kumar to be and who is not afraid to take a few jibes at himself as well. So you have his wife, played by Diana Penty, making fun of the star’s ‘masoode wali smile’ and you will not be able to hold back the laugh and marvel at Kumar’s ability to take a joke on himself at the same time. What makes t...

The trailer of The trailer begins with introducing Akshay as Vijay who is not a ‘normal star’ but a ‘superstar’. It is then revealed that Akshay is an actor who does ‘four movies, 2 OTT movies, 28 advertisements, 17 shows and some reality shows’ in a year. The trailer then presents Emraan as a middle-class RTO officer and a father of a young boy who is a big Vijay fan. The father then pledges to do anything to fulfill his and his son’s dream of taking a selfie with Vijay. However, tables turn when Akshay attacks Emraan and accuses him of calling the actor to the office forcefully, not for the driving test but to take a selfie. The ‘fan’ Emraan then decides to fight back. Soon after the trailer was released, several netizens reacted to it and expressed excitement for the movie. “Akshay Kumar is not just a history breaker he is also history creator," one of the fans wrote. Selfiee Review

Malayalam cinema isn't the same as Telugu or Tamil, but Bollywood's blanket approach fails to see the distinction in Selfiee, observes Sukanya Verma. The last time Akshay Kumar appeared on screen, he played a movie star telling his colleague-on-the-run to admit to his crime after unintentionally bumping off a sort-of fan on the road. In his latest too, he plays a movie star, only this time he's at the receiving end of his number one fan's wrath over a driving license. The crisis in Selfiee is infinitely smaller in scale, but the media circus it gives rise to resembles the spoofy outcry in An Action Hero. As telling that is about the state of affairs, at the centre of Selfiee's fracas is the age-old bond between film folks and their fans where the latter's only nightmare is their idol turning out nothing like they dream, a scenario captured in Shah Rukh Khan's Fan. Director Raj Mehta's Hindi remake of Driving License, Lal Jr's Malayalam hit penned by the late Sachy, chronicles a no-nonsense superstar and motor vehicle inspector clashing over pride and permit. Malayalam cinema isn't the same as Telugu or Tamil, but Bollywood's blanket approach fails to see the distinction. Where Sachy's narrative nuances and leading man Prithviraj's superlative complexity elevated its storm in a teacup premise into a believable tussle of privilege and entitlement, Selfiee's need to expand on an already overstated discord only highlights the slightness of the problem rather than give a glimps...

'Selfiee' review: Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar is back with yet another remake, and fans have been thrilled about his face-off with Emraan Hashmi since the trailer dropped. Selfiee, directed by Raj Mehta, is the remake of 2019's Malayalam hit Driving Licence, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu. But the engaging script of the much-loved Malayalam movie doesn't find a match in the Hindi remake. The movie starts by introducing the character of Emraan Hashmi, an RTO sub-inspector named Om Prakash Aggarwal, who, along with his son, is a devoted fan of superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay). As fans, Aggarwal and his son hope to click a selfie with their superstar someday. Vijay Kumar, who is in urgent need of a driving licence, arrives at the RTO office in Bhopal to meet Om Prakash in the hopes of collecting it and continuing the shoot for the climax scene that requires a car sequence. What appears to be a fanboy moment quickly turns into a clash between the two as the media intervenes for a piece of sensational news about a celebrity. From petty ego clashes to social media manipulation and #BoycottBollywood debates, Selfiee gives a glimpse into the other side of stardom. But the main theme centres around the fan-turned-foe moment, and the extent to which two men with bruised egos can go. Akshay pulls off the aura of a superstar, complete with swag and style. But, unlike the original movie, there is a lack of emotion that captures the audience's attention. Writer Rishabh Sharma has tweaked the story t...

Selfiee movie review: Akshay Kumar

Where to watch: Theatres Rating: 2.5 stars Every once in a while comes a film that has everything – music, drama, action, emotion, and twists – and yet, inexplicably, it misses the mark by a mile. Selfiee is that film. Hours after the first viewing, I am still trying to pin point where exactly the film lost me. It has two actors that can hold the audience, an intriguing concept and decent plot, plenty of mass appeal and masala elements, and fun elements too. Normally, all this would blend to form a delicious, entertaining cocktail. But Selfiee falters and stutters more than it entertains. The plot of Selfiee is pretty straightforward. Bollywood superstar Vijay Kumar ( When Kumar reaches the RTO for what he thinks is a five-minute-meet with a fan, he finds all the local media there and lashes out at Om Prakash in front of his son. The superfan loses it and berates the star in front of the media. Egos collide and the superstar and common man’s fight becomes fodder for national media. The film rests on the shoulders of its two leads and their clash. Akshay’s charm and screen presence lend credibility to Vijay Kumar, setting him up as this likable superstar, with a sizable fan base. There are a few meta references to Akshay’s lines, songs, and even his tendency of doing ‘4-6 films and 17 shows a year’. But it all lacks finesse. The jokes fall flat and when they work, it is largely because of Akshay’s immaculate comic timing. The actor tries his best to bring in his best despit...
