Check Out! Top 10 biggest falls in Sensex over the last 10 years

The Indian equity market has seen numerous ups and downs in the past decade with some brutal corrections followed by rocketing gains. It was a cat-and-mouse game as the tug of war continued between the bulls and bears. Interestingly, the Indian market has seen the steepest fall in the past 10 years and the last correction was witnessed this year on February 2. Moneycontrol takes a look at the biggest corrections in Indian markets over the last 10 years and the reasons behind them. January 21, 2008 The Sensex benchmark index saw its biggest fall of 1,408 points on this day. It recovered and closed at 17,605.40 after plunging to the day's low of 16,963.96 due to high volatility as investors panicked following weak global cues and fears of a recession in the US. The global investment climate witnessed a sea change as the US economy was going into recession and foreign institutional investors were trying to reroute their funds to stable developed markets. Hedge funds and FIIs were the biggest sellers in Indian markets at the time, making the most of the unprecedented bull run. As there is a big correlation among global markets and the presence of hedge funds across asset classes, along with increased global movement of capital, had increased event-related volatility. January 22, 2008 The Sensex saw its biggest intraday fall the following day when it hit a low of 15,332, down 2,273 points. However, it recovered losses and closed at a loss of 875 points at 16,730. The Nifty clos...

SENSEX Stock Market Index

The BSE Sensex closed 310 points lower at 62,920 on Thursday, easing from the near-record-high touched in the previous session as markets digested key domestic data and the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision. The US central bank held its funds rate steady, as expected, but the median forecast from FOMC members shows that two additional rate hikes could be in the books for this year. The moves drove policy-sensitive tech shares traded in Mumbai to lead the losses in the session, with Wipro sliding 2% while Infosys and TCS fell 1.1% each. Public sector banks also booked losses, with IndusInd Bank and the State Bank of India both dropping nearly 2%. Domestically, India’s trade balance narrowed less than expected from the corresponding period of the previous year. NEW RECORD: Sensex ends at all

Buoyed by late session gains, Indian stock markets ended higher today, with Sensex rising 248 points to 61,872, its highest ever on a closing basis. The broader Nifty50 index finished at 18,403 - its third highest close ever. Global stocks were mostly higher today while Wall Street futures were higher on hopes of easing US-China tension after the American and Chinese presidents met during the G20 summit. That fed hopes for an easing of US-Chinese tension over security, trade, technology and human rights. “The strongest tailwind for equity markets globally is the peaking of inflation in the US and the possibility of a slower pace of rate hikes. In tune with this trend, CPI inflation in India, too, has declined to 6.7 % in October from 7.4 % in September. The decline in crude to $92 dollars is another positive. All these can take the Nifty to a new record, but in typical market characteristics, it may not happen when the consensus expects it to happen," said VK Vijayakumar, Chief "A healthy trend in the market now is the slow accumulation in high quality large-caps. Sustained buying by the FIIs is supporting this trend. Some profit booking may be considered in mid and small-caps which have run up on good results," he added. Data released on Monday showed that India's annual retail inflation ease to 6.77% in October, from 7.41% in the previous month, data showed on Monday. However, that was higher than the 6.73% forecast by economists in a Reuters poll and the central bank's ...

Here are the biggest rallies Sensex has seen in the last 30 years

The BSE SENSEX can be expanded as the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index. In other terms, it is simply called SENSEX. This is a free-float stock market index of about 30 top-performing and financially well-off companies that are found listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Representing various industry sectors in the country, these 30 companies are some of the largest in the country whose stocks are very actively traded. The BSE SENSEX is always considered as the pulse of the domestic stock exchange markets in India. The base value of SENSEX was taken as 100 on April 1, 1979. Some important milestones in SENSEX The first notable milestone in the history of SENSEX was noted on July 25, 1990, when it touched four figures for the first time closing at 1,001. This was attributed to the excellent corporate gains in the country and a favourable monsoon. SENSEX crossed its 2000 mark on January 15, 1992; touched the 3,000 mark on February 29, 1992; crossed the 4,000 mark on March 30, 1992; touched the 5,000 mark on October 11, 1992; crossed the 6,000 mark on February 11, 2000. On June 21, 2005, the SENSEX crossed 7,000 marks following the settlement between the Ambani brothers which boosted up the investors’ sentiments. On November 5, 2010, the SENSEX crossed the 21,000 mark with a huge jump reaching a peak of 21,078 points. This record was maintained for about 3 years and SENSEX closed at 21,033.97 points on October 30, 2013. For the first time, the SENSEX reached 24,000 points ...

Nifty Hits Record 18,000 for First Time Ever, What Investors Should Do Now

The “Nifty hits the 18,000 mark, a record high, on the back of strong gains witnessed in banking stocks, particularly HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra. Even bellwethers such as Reliance Industries contributed to today’s historic move. However, the notable exception today was TCS, which is down 5 per cent, post its results announcement," said Aamar Deo Singh, Head Advisory, Angel One. Indian stock market had a spectacular year on the back of the support from retail investors and domestic institutions. The continuous support from the government to ease the stress of the telecom sector, the production-linked incentives for auto and auto-part manufactures helped to life the mood in the stock market amid weak global cues. The Nifty 50 has gained more than 27 per cent so far in 2021. The next stop for Nifty: 18,500? “The index resumed its prior rising trend and closed week with 2 per cent rise. While IT, media and auto sectors witnessed strength, pharma and FMCG sectors remained under pressure. The key technical indicators are positively poised. We continue to believe that undergoing positive momentum could take the index towards 18,500-18,700 levels. In case of decline, the Nifty index will find strong support at around 17,600-level," said Vikas Jain, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities. “Nifty Index crossing 18,000 levels marks the continuation of the bull phase in the India markets. There are strong positive sentiments on the domestic front, even though the gl...

Sensex’s roller

The Sensex is seen as the barometer of India’s growth and reflects the changes in the economy over time. So if stocks of companies in industrial, material and consumer discretionary segments, such as engineering, cement, fertilizers and consumer electronics, dominated the initial composition, the services sector came to represent it with the inclusion of financial services, telecommunications and others in the mid-1990s. From early 2000, sectors such as information technology, financial services, consumer discretionary, healthcare and even energy became important components of the Sensex. “The S&P BSE Sensex has remained the essential gauge for the economic health of the Indian market over the last 40 years and continues to demonstrate tremendous vitality. The reputation, integrity and track record of this benchmark fully reflects the fundamental role that indices play in today’s financial market. The S&P BSE Sensex is a witness of the evolution of the Indian economy, having passed many milestones in the last 40 years. The benchmark closed for the first time above the 10,000 mark in 2006, above 20,000 in 2007 and reached 30,000 in 2017," said Koel Ghosh, head, South Asia, S&P Dow Jones Indices. Sensex Approaches Record High — TradingView News

The BSE Sensex reversed from early losses and closed 70 points higher at 63,230 on Wednesday, the highest since hitting its record high in early December 2022 with support from metal producers as investors awaited the interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve. Tata Steel led the gains among the heavyweights in Mumbai with a 2.5% advance, supported by expectations of higher demand from China after the PBoC lowered short-term interest rates. Policy-sensitive tech shares and auto manufacturers also closed in the green, supported by a dovish outlook for the RBI after wholesale prices in India fell by more than expected in May. On the other hand, banks booked losses.
