Telangana Liberation Day: All you need to the evolution of this day

Despite India has got independence on August 15, 1947, the Hyderabad state had to wait for a period to get out from the clutches of Nizams and Razakars as they were ruling the state. The seventh Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, who had a pact with the British has been ruling Hyderabad independently. Although the people of Hyderabad were in support to merge in India, the Nizam Nawab did not agree to the proposal. During the rule of the Nizam, the Razakars erupted and created many atrocities on people looting money. At the instigation of the Nizam, Razakar leader Qasim Razvi challenged that he would hoist the Asaf Jahi flag over the Delhi Red Fort. Against this backdrop, the State Congress, the Communist Party, and Arya Samaj launched a struggle against the Nizam's tyrannical rule. However, all these institutions were banned by Osman Ali Khan. Apart from Telangana, Marathwada, Hyderabad, and Karnataka were ruled by the Nizam Nawab. Believing that there will be a threat to the survival of the country if the state is not merged in the Indian Union, the then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel decided to take military action against the state of Hyderabad. While the Nawab of Nizam sent a message to Pakistan for help and turned to the United Nations. The Indian Army launched the siege of the State of Hyderabad on September 13, 1948, under the name 'Operation Polo'. The Indian army launched a siege from all over Hyderabad. In the battle, first, the army led by Nal Durg took over all ...

Telangana Liberation Day

While India's national flag was unfurled across the nation on 15th August 1947, the erstwhile state of Hyderabad had to wait for an agonising 13 months, still languishing under the tyranny of the Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. It was only after a relentless struggle with Sardar Vallabhai Patel ordering police action under Operation Polo that the entire Hyderabad Deccan was finally liberated on September17,1948. This September 17, Maharashtra will be celebrating the 73rd Marathwada Mukti Sangram Diwas. Maharashtra in general and the Marathwada region in particular recognise the valiant efforts of Swami Ramanand Tirth, Govindbhai Shroff, Vajayantra Kabra, P H Patwardhan, and others to gain independence from the Nizam. These leaders withstood the violence unleashed by the private militia of the Nizam, the Razakars, which is well documented in written histories and discussed in the oral lore of the region. Similarly, Karnataka too celebrates Hyderabad-Karnataka Liberation Day to commemorate the liberation of the north eastern districts of Bidar, Kalaburagi and Raichur that were part of the erstwhile Hyderabad state. Unfortunately, my home state of Telangana does not share the same fortune. In spite of the entire present-day Telangana being part of the erstwhile Hyderabad Deccan state under the Nizam, there is no recognition of the heroes of this region who withstood the atrocities of the Razakars in fighting for the region's liberation. The heroics and sacrifices of t...

Centre to Officially Celebrate Hyderabad 'Liberation Day' Amid Politics Over September 17

New Delhi:The Union government has announced that it will holda year-long commemoration to mark 75 years of ‘Hyderabad State Liberation’, kicking off with an inaugural event presided over by Union home minister Amit Shah in Hyderabad on September 17. The erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad – which covered the modern-day Marathwada region in Maharashtra, the Hyderabad-Karnataka region in Karnataka, and all districts in current-day Telangana – became part of the Union of India on September 17, 1948. Union culture minister G. Kishan Reddy has written letters to the chief ministers of Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra, inviting them to the inaugural programme at the Hyderabad Parade Grounds. Along with Amit Shah, the Karnataka and Maharashtra chief ministers are likely to participate in the event. It is not yet clear if Telangana chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao will attend the event, given that his Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government has not acceded to the demand of observing the day officially as ‘liberation day’. “I am happy to inform you that the Government of India, after careful consideration of the various aspects, decided to celebrate 75 years of Hyderabad State Liberation. The Government of India has approved year-long commemoration of ‘Hyderabad State Liberation’ from Sep 17, 2022 to Sep 17, 2023,” Reddy wrote in each of the letters dated September 3. He has also requested the three chief ministers to observe the inaugural day of commemoration with sui...

Year

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) The central government will hold year-long celebrations to mark 75 years of ‘Hyderabad State Liberation’ with Home Minister Amit Shah as chief guest at the inaugural event on September 17, Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy said on Saturday. Reddy has written letters to the chief ministers of Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra, inviting them at the inaugural programme at the Hyderabad Parade Grounds. “I am happy to inform you that the Government of India, after careful consideration of the various aspects, decided to celebrate 75 years of Hyderabad State Liberation. The Government of India has approved year-long commemoration of ‘Hyderabad State Liberation’ from Sep 17, 2022 to Sep 17, 2023,” Reddy wrote in the identical letters dated September 3. He has also requested the three CMs — K Chandrashekar Rao (Telangana), Basavaraj Bommai (Karnataka) and Eknath Shinde (Maharashtra) to observe inaugural day of commemoration with suitable events across their states. “I would also request you to identify events and commemorations throughout the year and share these plans with the Government of lndia so that a holistic approach can be taken in planning the yearlong commemorations,” he wrote. The State of Hyderabad which was under the Nizam’s rule was annexed into the Union of India after a police action codenamed ‘Operation Polo’ that culminated on September 17, 1948. Reddy, an MP from Secunderabad, later tweeted that the inaugural programme will be hel...

BJP plans to go for TRS jugular with ‘Liberation Day’

By Express News Service HYDERABAD: Come rain or sunshine, the political atmosphere in Telangana on September 17 would be blistering hot with the BJP unveiling its year-long plans for the State beginning with Telangana “Liberation Day”. The BJP plans to put the State government on the mat for not celebrating the day when Hyderabad State was merged into the Indian Union in 1948. To go for the jugular of the TRS government, the BJP State unit plans to invite Union Home Minister Amit Shah and possibly Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to address a massive public meeting on the occasion. BJP State spokesperson NV Subhash said that the party plans to ensure at least one of these two leaders addresses the public meeting, at a venue which is yet to be finalised. The party also plans to invite Chief Ministers of Maharashtra and Karnataka, Eknath Shinde and Baswaraj Bommai respectively, as parts of these two States were part of the erstwhile Hyderabad State. “BJP has been celebrating the occasion every year in the villages that had revolted against the Razakars. But this time we are planning to invite the CMs from these States, something that has not been done earlier,” Subhash told Express. The party is mulling whether to organise the public meeting in Nizamabad, Adilabad or Hyderabad. It is known that BJP and its like-minded organisations have planned year-long celebrations of Telangana’s own ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ starting September 17. Several organisations, includ...

Hyderabad Liberation Day or National Integration Day: Why the hype over September 17?

It’s a single event in history but different political perspectives on it will see parallel events being held to mark the occasion. September 17 will be commemorated by the Union government as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ and by the government of Telangana as ‘National Integration Day’ as the BJP and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) compete to stir sensibilities in their attempts to woo the electorate for the Telangana assembly polls scheduled next year. September 17, 1948 is the day Nizam of Hyderabad Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh in the line of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, had surrendered in the wake of Operation Polo, the military invasion of Hyderabad by Indian forces. It is commonly believed to be the day Hyderabad became part of the Indian Union. In reality, not quite so. The accession happened on January 26, 1950 when the Nizam was made ‘Rajpramukh’ of Hyderabad state. What do the historical records say? Operation Polo—The Police Action Against Hyderabad 1948, by S.N. Prasad, possibly the most authentic reference to the convulsions in the Deccan at that time, is also the first volume prepared by the historical division of the Union ministry of defence. It points out that the Nizam of Hyderabad was anxious to come to an honourable settlement with India. On September 23, 1948, in a broadcast to the Islamic world about “the true facts of the Hyderabad situation”, the Nizam denounced the Laik Ali government and the Razakar militia, which together for over eight months “brought...

“Telangana has transitioned from an autocracy to a democratic system and on September 17, 2022, the transition marks 75 years. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also been invited for the same. On that date in 1948, the erstwhile state of Hyderabad run by the Nizams was annexed to India. In a letter addressed to the chief ministers of Telangana (K. Chandrashekhar Rao), Maharashtra and Karnataka, union culture minister G. Kishan Reddy invited them as guests of honour for the inaugural event of the ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ event in Telangana. The ent...
