‘Shaakuntalam’ Telugu movie review: Samantha gets her moments but this mythological romance is a misfire with subpar writing and visual effects

Director Gunasekhar’s Telugu film Shaakuntalam, a retelling of Shakuntala’s story from Mahabharata, is an ambitious experiment. The makers hope that the audience will be awed by the romance between Shakuntala and Dushyant and the origin story of king Bharath in 3D. If the contemporary audience can watch international superhero and fantasy stories, why not a tale from our epics? The intent is appreciable and the director gets Samantha Ruth Prabhu to portray Shakuntala’s resilience and the actor is convincing. But the film falls woefully short in its technical finesse and the screenplay, too, is choppy. Samantha Ruth Prabhu: We have come a long way to find our place in the film industry One of the better segments of Shaakuntalam, though melodramatic, unfolds in the court of Dushyant (Dev Mohan), the king of the Puru dynasty. Shakuntala’s adopted mother (Gauthami) and friends (Adarsh Balakrishna and Yash Puri) from Kanva maharshi’s ashram are at a loss to help Shakuntala after Dushyant declares that he has never seen her so that he may accept her as his wife or her unborn child as his own. Shakuntala, who until then silently takes in the heartbreak and disappointment, speaks up and confronts the king, only to be humiliated. Samantha and Dev Mohan make the scene stand out. Shaakuntalam Cast: Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Dev Mohan Direction: Gunasekhar Music: Mani Sharma The first hour passes in the forests, presented in a Disney-like manner, narrating how Shakuntala and her friends A...

Shaakuntalam Review: Shakuntalam is a grand cinematic experience with underwhelming storytelling

Shaakuntalam Story: Based on Kalidasa’s Abhijnana Shakuntalam, this is the love story of King Dushyant and sage Vishwakarma and Menaka’s daughter Shakuntala. Sage Durvasa’s curse makes Dushyant forget all about Shakuntala until the spell breaks and the two reunite. Shaakuntalam Review: In this movie, one of the most revered poems by ancient Indian poet Kalidasa is retold on a grand scale. Whether the dreamlike milieu when Shakuntala (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) and Dushyant (Dev Mohan) romance or the stark backdrop of war sequences, the production and visual appeal have been dialled up in a big way. The film quickly displays its CGI and action prowess when Dushyant valiantly saves a village from wild beasts, including tigers and wolves. The viewers are then introduced to Shakuntala and Dushyant’s love story in the high dynamic range, with an uber-colourful forest replete with butterflies, peacocks, deer and flora. The film does not lose its grip on grandiosity, including in the stop-motion animation of mythological backstories. While you marvel at the visuals, the VFX, Ashok Kumar’s art direction and Joseph V Sekhar’s cinematography in creating the mythological world, the overall storytelling is a tad underwhelming. It covers a series of events, but director Gunasekhar does not venture too boldly in terms of the narrative. The chronicle is a bit too straightforward for all the grand scale and cinematic experience. Mani Sharma’s rich melodies, from the soothing ‘Mallika Mallika’ ...
