Adi Shankaracharya

Adi Shankaracharya, or Adi Shankara, or the first Shankara, was a great Vedic guru, philosopher, and teacher. Adi Shankaracharya was an ocean of wisdom and possessed vast knowledge from a very early age. His teachings and contributions are significant forces in developing the Hindu religion and philosophy we see today. Throughout his journey, Adi Shankara integrated the concepts of older “ Death Regarding the birth of Adi Shankara, there are disparities among historians, scholars, and researchers. So, each of them proposes theories and dates for Shankaracharya’s birth. Some of the proposed dates are: • According to the records from the Adi Shankaracharya’s four cardinal peethams, these four institutes were established on various dates like Dvaraka Pitham (491 BCE), Jyotirmatha Pitham (485 BCE). Moreover, the books like Shankara Satpatha and others provide information regarding his birth’s astronomical data, highlighting 509 BCE as his birth date. Therefore, researchers believe that the sage Adi Shankara lived around 509 to 477 BCE. • A scholarly commentary by Anandagiri or Anandajnana believed saint Adi Shankaracharya’s birth was in 44 BCE till 12 BCE. • An Indian scholar, Sir Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar, believed 680 CE as the Adi Shankara birth date. • John M. Sankranthi Muggulu

Once you have decided the surface on which you will draw the Muggulu, start creating the design in a step-by-step process as described below with images. Making 5-3 dots for Sankranthi Chukkala Muggulu | Pongal Kolam After you have decided the surface to draw your Sankranthi Muggulu, draw the rangoli dot grid as shown in the images below. Draw 5 horizontal dots and follow it with drawing another 4 horizontal dots above and below the 5 dots. To complete the rangoli dot grid, make another 3 dots each above and below the 4 dots as shown in the images below. Steps 1 to 17 Now that our rangoli dots are ready, we will start drawing the outline of our Sankranthi Muggulu around it. We will start connecting the dots with lines and curves to give shape to it. After Step 11, you can start colouring the stem and the leaves with blue and green colour wood husk or rangoli colour. You can also choose any other colour combination of your choice. At step 17, you will notice that the Chukkala Muggulu is starting to take shape. Life of Shankaracharya

The 'Philosophical' Birth of a Philosopher In the south Indian state of Kerala there once lived a learned Nambudiri brahmin couple. Even though this pious duo enjoyed all the blessings of life - fertile fields, abundant milch cows, plentiful wealth, well-built mansions and hosts of loving relatives - all this failed to give joy to them for the simple reason that even after many years of conjugal bliss, they were still not blessed with a symbol of their affection - an offspring. In their distress they called upon Lord Shiva for mercy. It is said that the great godhimself appeared in the husband's dream and asked his desire. Shiva gave the distressed scholar two choices: an all-knowing talented but short-lived son, or one who would live very long but without any special virtue or greatness. The childless man, instead of declaring his preference, replied, "What do you think? Please do whatever is best for humanity." Though this story may or may not be accurate in the modern 'historical' sense, it does hold a significant moral. When confronted with a choice, one can learn from this incident that if the person giving the choice is much greater than oneself, the best option would appear to be to defer the decision to the boon giver.
