In Maharashtra's ED political potboiler, Sharad Pawar has the last laugh

Mumbai : The scenes that unfolded after the Enforcement Directorate’s case of alleged money laundering against NCP chief Sharad Pawar were akin to a political potboiler in which the 78-year-old veteran politician had the last laugh. He shrewdly transformed the situation to turn himself from an accused to a victim and then to a victor, and, in the process, galvanised his party’s cadres, who were demoralised after a humiliating Lok Sabha defeat and a string of defections. He even wove senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar’s sudden resignation as MLA , potentially a cause of controversy, into his narrative — his nephew, “known to act impulsively,” was upset, hurt that Sharad Pawar’s name was dragged into the ED case, the NCP chief said. “The BJP’s brahmastra (weapon with all the power in the universe) boomeranged and turned against the party. There are so many in BJP itself who should be under the lens of investigative agencies, but they chose to target Pawar saheb before the elections. Pawar saheb astutely handled the situation and it is politically backfiring on the BJP now,” said Vidya Chavan, a senior Mumbai-based NCP leader, who was present at the ED office in Mumbai Friday in protest of its action. The ED Tuesday filed a case of alleged money laundering against Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar and about 70 others from across parties, mostly from the Congress and NCP, in connection with irregularities in the functioning of the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank. NCP chief Sharad Pawar receives death threats on Twitter

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has received death threats on Twitter. In response to this alarming situation, a delegation from the NCP, led by Supriya Sule, NCP MP and daughter of Sharad Pawar, paid a visit to the Mumbai Police Commissioner. The purpose of their visit is to seek appropriate action against the Twitter account responsible for issuing the menacing threats. According to the reports, a person issued a death threat through the micro-blogging site Twitter. The individual, identified as Saurabh Pimpalkar, likened Pawar to Aurangzeb and ominously suggested that he would face a similar outcome as the Mughal emperor. Moreover, there are reports of another death threat on Facebook, where a user named Narmadabai Patwardhan posted a message insinuating that the NCP chief would meet a fate similar to that of Narendra Dabholkar, who was tragically killed. Supriya Sule, after meeting with the Mumbai Police Commissioner, briefed him about the two threats directed towards Pawar. She conveyed her concerns and the Commissioner reassured her that appropriate and stringent measures would be taken against the individuals responsible. Speaking to the media, Sule said that she had received a message on WhatsApp for Pawar Saheb and that he was threatened through a website.

Analysis: Sharad Pawar's Succession Plan Reflects His Astute Politics

New Delhi: The appointment of Supriya Sule and Praful Patel as working presidents of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) clearly indicates Sharad Pawar's efforts to ensure his party's unity and future. It shows the veteran is not just putting in place a succession plan, but also working to strengthen the NCP's prospects in Maharashtra. Sharad Pawar made the announcement in the presence of his nephew Ajit Pawar, the Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra. Contrary to speculation, this move is not likely to sideline Ajit Pawar. As the grassroots politician with a firm grip over local administrative affairs and as the party's "nuts-and-bolts" man in the sugarcane belt of Western Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar is likely to enjoy full functional and operational autonomy over the party's working in Maharashtra. The announcement came weeks after Sharad Pawar's dramatic resignation as party chief, which he took back within three days amid an outpouring of grief among his supporters. It is evident that after that episode, the 82-year-old politician senses improved prospects for his party in upcoming elections and that he is ready to take on a larger role as the axis of a fragmented opposition ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Ajit Pawar remains the undisputed leader of the party in Maharashtra after his uncle. But Sharad Pawar's resignation and the overwhelming support from his party workers have only given him the emotional impetus to take the decision of anointing two of his trusted ...
