Shiv Sena likely to contest in 23 Maharashtra LS seats in 2024, says minister

Maharashtra minister and Shiv Sena leader Tanaji Sawant on Monday said his party would contest 23 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the 2024 polls, the assertion coming a day after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Shinde had said the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party, both part of the ruling coalition in the state, will contest all polls henceforth together. Speaking to reporters in Osmanabad (Dharashiv), Sawant said, "The (undivided) Shiv Sena had contested 23 Lok Sabha seats in 2019 general elections, winning 18. In the next Lok Sabha polls, which is less than a year away, we will do the same. Shiv Sena will contest 23 seats." Sawant's comments came a day after local BJP MLA Rana Jagjitsingh had claimed BJP will win Osmanabad Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 polls. Read | Osmanabad was allotted to the Shiv Sena in the 2019 general elections and was won by Omprakash Rajenimbalkar, who is now with Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT). "If anyone is going to take us for granted, we will not accept it. We are a separate party and have our own identity and symbol. We will contest as per the existing seat sharing formula," Sawant asserted. The Shiv Sena split in June last year following a rebellion led by Eknath Shine, who went on to become CM with the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Earlier in the day, Shinde in a "During the meeting, it was decided that all future elections (including the Lok Sab...

Two held from Mumbai suburb for issuing death threats to Sanjay Raut and his MLA brother – ThePrint – PTIFeed

Mumbai, Jun 10 (PTI) Two men were arrested from a suburb in Mumbai on Saturday, a day after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut claimed he and his MLA brother Sunil Raut had received death threat calls and asked the Maharashtra government to take them seriously. The accused duo- one of them an autorickshaw driver and another an interior designing worker-were detained on Friday itself from the eastern suburb of Govandi but the police awaited an official complaint in the case before arresting them, an official said. Preliminary information suggests that they made the threat calls to the Raut brothers under the influence of alcohol, he said, adding that further investigation is underway. They were tracked based on the location of their mobile phones and call recordings provided by the Raut brothers, the official said. Earlier, Sunil Raut had received a call in which the person on the other side threatened to shoot him as well as his brother Sanjay Raut, police said on Friday. “The government should take it (threat to him and his brother) seriously and not me. The government wants such threats. The matter is with the police and they will have to look into it,” Sanjay Raut had told reporters. Sunil Raut received a threat. I didn’t lodge any complaint. We are not worried about it, claimed Raut, who has received threats in the past as well. Police registered a case against the arrested men under section 506-II (criminal intimidation – threat to cause death or grievous hurt) ...

Maha alliance in trouble? BJP MLA lashes out at Sena over Shrikant Shinde's remarks

ALSO READ | Shrikant Shinde's remark was triggered by BJP leaders' move to pass a resolution not to support his father Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Hitting out at the Shinde faction, saffron party leader and MLA Sanjay Kelkar claimed that no one can win in Thane district without the help of the BJP. "Be it Thane, Kalyan or Palghar, wasn't all these Lok Sabha constituencies once owned by the BJP," Kelkar asked his party cadre during a meeting of Maha Jan Sampark Abhiyan in Thane. Meanwhile, without taking names, Shinde camp's spokesperson Naresh Mhaske pointed out that when senior leaders make decisions, street leaders like us must recognise our limits and must speak within those limitations. "Be it Shiv Sena or BJP, everyone has benefited from power," Mhaske said. BJP MP Sena MLA engage in war of words after ad claims CM Shinde more popular than Fadnavis

Mumbai, Jun 14 (PTI) BJP MP from Maharashtra Anil Bonde on Wednesday hit out at Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and said a frog does not become an elephant even if it swells, prompting a Shiv Sena MLA to hit back, saying the former's ministers could find a place in the cabinet only because of his party's "50 tigers". The slugfest comes a day after full-page advertisements were carried across major newspapers in the state on, citing a survey that showed CM Shinde ahead of his deputy Devendra Fadnavis in popularity. It did not have the pictures of either Fadnavis or Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray. Since then the unease between the two ruling allies has risen. On Wednesday, another advertisement on the state's ruling alliance appeared in Marathi dailies featuring leaders like Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray and Deputy CM Fadnavis. "A frog doesn't become an elephant even if it swells itself. His (Shinde) advisers may be giving him wrong advice. Uddhav ji (Thackeray) used to think Mumbai is entire Maharashtra. Now, Eknath ji Shinde thinks Thane is entire Maharashtra," Bonde said. His remarks evoked a sharp reaction from Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad, who said it was due to Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray's help that the BJP grew in the state. "The way Eknath Shinde is working and then comparing him to a frog or saying that he is only restricted to Thane…with whose help did you (the BJP) grow in Maharashtra? You grew with the help of Balasaheb Thackeray. What was your position...
