Uddhav Thackeray

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday allotted a new election symbol to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction – a 'flaming torch' (mashaal) in the current bye-election and till the final order is passed in the current dispute between the Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde factions. The EC has also allotted “Shiv Sena - Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray" as the party name for the Uddhav Thackeray faction. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has also asked the Eknath Shinde faction to furnish a list of three fresh symbols by tomorrow, 11 October. The Eknath Shinde faction has been given the name of ‘Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena’. Citing religious connotations, the poll body declined to allot 'Trishul', 'Rising Sun' and 'Gada' as symbols as they were "not in the list of free symbols". The Election Commission had on Saturday frozen the "bow and arrow" symbol of Shiv Sena, barring both the rival camps from using it in the bye-election amid a tussle between the factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde. Both groups had submitted the names of their groups by which they may be recognized by the commission. Both groups were also given choices for the symbols which may be allotted to the candidates for the bye-election. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, an accused in a money laundering case investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), on Monday said a new election symbol for the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction could bring a "big revolution" in the coming days. “Eve...

Sena: Big blow to Uddhav Thackeray, EC gives Sena’s name & symbol to Shinde faction

NEW DELHI: In a big setback to the Uddhav Thackeray faction, the Election Commission relied on the ‘test of majority’ in the party legislative wing to allot the name ‘Shiv Sena’ and its poll symbol ‘bow and arrow’ to the group led by Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde. In its final order on the Sena feud on Friday, EC ruled that the Thackeray faction may retain the name ‘Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and symbol ‘flaming torch’ – allotted to it as part of an interim EC order -- till the completion of the ongoing bypolls to Chinchwad and Kasba Peth assembly seats in Maharashtra. Thereafter, it can decide whether to retain the same poll symbol or opt for another ‘free’ poll symbol for future elections, a senior EC functionary told TOI. EC examined four key issues while adjudicating the Sena ‘symbol’ case: whether the petition dated July 19, 2022, filed by the Shinde faction was maintainable in view of the pending disqualification proceedings against the Sena MLAs; whether a split had occurred in the party; what test to apply for adjudication of the dispute; and which faction is entitled to use the symbol ‘bow and arrow’ that was frozen earlier in an interim order by EC pending settlement of the dispute. The poll panel concluded that the proceedings were maintainable as the conditions under Para 15 of the Symbols Order were fulfilled. It said the impact of pendency of “disqualification proceedings” was comprehensively argued in the Supreme Court and Delhi High C...

Eknath Shinde faction gets Shiv Sena name, symbol

The Election Commission of India on Friday allotted the name ‘Shiv Sena’ and the party’s bow and arrow symbol to the Eknath Shinde faction in effect recognising it as the original party founded by Balasaheb Thackerey. The Commission said that it had based its decision on a “test on majority” as the group of MLAs supporting the Eknath Shinde group had got nearly 76% of the votes polled for the 55 winning Shiv Sena candidates in the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, while the Uddhav Thackeray faction got only 23.5% of votes. Victory of democracy, says Eknath Shinde; democracy dead, declares Uddhav Thackeray “The party name Shiv Sena and the Party symbol Bow and Arrow will be retained by the petitioner (Eknath Shinde) faction,” the EC ruled in a detailed 78-page order. The two factions have been locked in a fight over the party’s name and symbol since last June when Mr. Shinde walked out of Maharashtra’s ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance with 40 MLAs in a high-voltage revolt. Mr. Shinde then became the Chief Minister with the support of the BJP. Before the Election Commission, his faction has claimed the support of 40 of the Shiv Sena’s 56 MLAs and 13 of the 18 Members of the Lok Sabha. Shinde, Uddhav factions have new names. But what's the origin story of 'Shiv Sena' & its symbol?

Mumbai: In the early 1960s, there was a daily trickle of visitors at an unassuming one-bedroom house close to Mumbai’s Shivaji Park. The draw: It was Bal Thackeray’s residence. One day, his father, Keshav Thackeray aka Prabodhankar, a social reformer and journalist, asked Bal Thackeray what he planned to do with the increasing crowd of supporters coming to their house every day, and if he was thinking of establishing an organisation. At the time, Bal Thackeray’s cause of ‘justice for the sons of the soil’ was gathering momentum with his column ‘ Vacha ani thanda basa (Read and sit tight)’ in his publication, Marmik. The cause was getting so much traction that the younger Thackeray said he was thinking of binding it in an organisational structure. His father suggested he name the outfit Shiv Sena — a monicker inspired by the Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji and his sena (army). It seemed like an apt name for an organisation born to deliver justice to the Marathi people, the sons of the soil. On 19 June 1966, Bal Thackeray launched the Shiv Sena, and there was no looking back… until 2022, when the party’s name and identity became the subject of a rancorous tug of war. As he addressed people via social media Sunday, Prabodhankar’s grandson Uddhav Thackeray narrated the anecdote about the origins of the party to emphasise just how personal the loss of the name — Shiv Sena — would be to him. On Monday, the Election Commission of India (EC) gave both f...
