Sri Suktam (Shree Suktam): The Significance of Daily Invocation of Goddess Lakshmi

Sri Suktam (Shree Suktam) is a Sanskrit devotional hymn addressed to appease Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, prosperity and fertility. This Vedic sloka is specially chanted on Fridays for abundant peace, prosperity and overall happiness. Goddess Lakshmi, who is known to be the devoted wife of Lord Vishnu or Narayan, depicts the magnificence and grandeur of Gods. Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, together, stand for ‘Being’ and ‘Becoming’. Sri Suktam is one of the Pancha Suktam (5 Suktams) which are as follows; Vishnu Suktam, Bhu suktam, Sri Suktam, Purusha suktam, and Nila Suktam. By reciting the Sri Suktam mantra, one can attain pure bliss of happiness. It is widely believed that chanting of this divine sloka helps in attaining a supreme power to those who recite it with devotion and full discipline. With the regular recitation of this powerful mantra, one can draw all-round prosperity, goodness, health, wealth and happiness. According to Vishnu Purana, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, are like fire and heat, oil and greasiness, sun and light, flower and fragrance, water and liquidity, etc. Taking note of such a similarity, it is crystal clear that the two are in fact ‘one being envision as twofold’ for meditation and worship. The Shree Suktam is the invocation of God, depicting the grandeur of his creation, his sovereignty, his supreme powers, and his magnificent divine being. shrI

shrI - in shrI sUktam shrI - in shrI-sUktam shrI - what is it? What does this prefix mean? The syllable shrI originates in shrI-sUktam of Rig-Veda. This shrI is not only the material prosperity but both aihika-AmuShmika prosperities - as contained in shrI sUktam of Rig-Veda. But, over a time this label has come to mean goddess lakshmi, the consort of nArAyaNa, who in turn is the anthropomorphized goddess presiding over every kind of prosperity, as has been adumbrated in canons like, saubhgya lakshmi upaniShad, lakshmi tantra etc. shrI as contained in Rig-Veda shrI sUktam is primarily meant to mean - a non-deficient, non-exiguous, non-sparse - a want-less-syndrome; but not overabundance, hoarding, or amassing syndrome; a completeness, plenitude; pashu sampada - plenitude of cattle; dhAnya sampada - of grain and cereals; vidyA sampada - of education; santAna sampada - of progeny; vAk siddhi= of speech; vAk shuddhi - expression; health, vigour, vitality - and what not. Ultimately - bhogam, bhAgyam - living a self-sufficient life till its finish, of course, through all these want-less-syndromes. To arrive at the concept of the syllable shrI, it is necessary to scribble the meanings of shrI sUktam on the above lines, because its etymological formation and derivation - the formation of a word and the development of its meaning - occurs in 3rd hymn of that sUktam. To jot down the meaning of this sUktam, another deterrent is the word jAta-veda, who in this sUktam is continuously p...

Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, prosperity and fertility. As we go through Shree Suktam we find Lotus dominating the narration. Let us try to understand significance of Lotus, especially in relation to Lakshmi. Lotus, finds a special place among Gods like Vishnu, Lakshmi, Ganesha and Saraswati. Brahma, the ultimate creator emerges from a Lotus as well, which has bloomed from the navel of Vishnu. Lotus grows with its roots in the mud pushing up with its long stalks through water to bloom. It is said that lotus grows mostly in Murky water. The sense of purity is attributed to this habit of lotus, rising clean out of the murky waters which represent desire and attachment. This purity as also devotion is represented by the white and pink coloured Lotus, while Red, Purple and blue coloured lotus symbolizes ascension, enlightenment or rebirth. It is also said that, at Sun set (during night) Lotus withdraws itself into water and rises to bloom at Sun raise (Morning). The eminence and the eternality of Goddess Lakshmi have been talked well in our profound sacred texts. She has likewise been venerated by our awesome holy people like Shri Adi Jagadguru Shankaracharya, Shri Vallabhacarya, shri ...

Sri Suktam Sadhana by Om Swami

॥ॐ श्रीमात्रे नमः॥ ॥oṃ śrīmātre namaḥ॥ I am immanent in all beings and I hum like the female bumble bee. From my abode in Surya and Candra I gush forth in an unbroken flow of absolute sound (nada) like the flow of oil during the interval between the closing and opening of (God’s) eyes. As I travel (in turn through) all the centres of the body, from the root plexus to the crown with the brilliance of thousands of risen suns, fires and moons, I unfold (myself) as manifested sound… and become the mother of (all) sounds, showering objects of enjoyment in the same way as a cow (showers milk)… Like a doe I flee farther and farther from the mind of the yogin. Yogins observing their vows bind me through their own devotion. Sixty-eight thousand yogins engaged in worshipping me and 1 If you came up to me and asked what is the one sadhana of the Divine Mother that you could do in your daily life as well as for your intense practice, without a moment’s hesitation I would say the Sri Suktam Sadhana. Taken from the oldest of the four Vedas, the Rigveda, this is themost powerful Vedic sadhana of Mother Goddess. In fact, its usage, adoption and application is so widespread that Sri Suktam is the only Vedic hymn that is used to invoke the divine feminine energy across the five branches of Sanatana Dharma: Shaivites (those who worship Shiva), Vaishnavas (those who predominantly worship Vishnu), Ganapatya (those who worship Ganesha), Saura (those who worship the Sun) and of course, Shakta (t...

Sri Suktam

Shloka, meaning “song” in Sanskrit, is the poetic verse written in couplets of sixteen syllables that form the basis of classic Indian epics such as the Ramayana. The shloka, therefore, refers to the specific metric convention of the verse. Mantras, which can be a monosyllabic sound or an incantation of a specific verse, can fall under the design of the shloka as it does with the Suktams. While mantras themselves are very powerful meditation tools, Sukthams provide an even deeper spiritual connection as they allow you to connect not only with the cosmos but the Gods. The Suktams have beautifully crafted Vedic praises and hymns, each one different for different deities, that contains not only praise, but thoughts of contemplation, of observance, and of wisdom. It is said that the great sages who had penned these verses were able to do so under divine inspiration which imbued these hymns with great knowledge of the universe. Calling upon these deities through the god of fire, Agni, who is the medium between men and gods, is to evoke their blessings upon you and yours. The Pancha Suktam (“five Suktams”) is devoted to five of the most important Hindu deities; • Purusha Suktam for the cosmic being, Purusha, through whose sacrifice has created all gods and thus the universe • Vishnu Suktam for the preserver, Vishnu, one of the principal gods who acts as the preserver of good and the protector from chaos and destruction. • Bhu Suktam for Mother Earth, Bhumi Devi, a consort to Vis...
