The life Of Indian Army In Siachen The life of Indian Army in Siachen glacier. The Siachen glacier demarcates central Asia from the Indian subcontinent, and separates Pakistan from China in the region. The Saltoro Ridge of the Siachin glacier serves as a divide that prevents direct linking of PoK with China, stopping them to develop geographical military linkages in the area. Siachen also serves as a watchtower for India to keep a deep watch on Gilgit and Baltistan regions of Pakistan. Let us see the hardship that army jawans and officers have to face defending the position from Pakistan. Location • TheSiachen Glacier is in the easternKarakoramrange in theHimalayas where theLine of ControlbetweenIndiaandPakistan passes. • At 76km (47mi) long, it is the longestglacier in the Karakoram andsecond-longest in the world’s non-polar areas. • The average wintersnowfallis more than 1000cm (35ft), and temperatures can dip to −50°C (−58°F). Valiant soldiers dare the life

All ten bodies of Siachen tragedy have been laid to rest at their respective homes. The soldiers got buried under snow due to collapse of a snow wall on February 3. This does not deter or even lower the spirit and morale of the brave troops stationed in the highest battlefield but surely, the irreparable loss remains a concern. Unassuming harsh winters, that too under hostile environment, keeps sending a gentle reminder of National Security requirements, inadequacy of which could lead to sacrifice of Military personnel. We at Skymet pay tribute to our soldiers and salute their bravery. The satellite imageries indicate shrinking of glaciers mainly on account of positioning of troops, both of India and Pakistan, in the region. Located in the eastern Karakoram ranges in the western Himalayas, at altitudes of 15,000 to 21,000 feet, military personnels man the posts where the temperature drops to - 60°C. Serving in Siachen does not only require tremendous medical fitness but also a nerve of steel to survive there for months together. Snowstorms in Siachen may last for several days and are invariably accompanied with very strong winds, exceeding 100 kmph. Yearly snowfall in Siachen can be well over 3 dozen feet. During the snowstorm, at least 2 to 3 soldiers have to keep using shovels to clear snow around their post, otherwise the location gets buried. In Siachen, you are at a risk of getting a deadly frostbite if the bare skin touches steel, including gun trigger, for just over...

Siachen: All you should know about the world’s costliest battlefield

• Why is Siachen important? * The Siachen glacier demarcates central Asia from the Indian subcontinent, and separates Pakistan from China in the region. * The Saltoro Ridge of the Siachin glacier serves as a divide that prevents direct linking of PoK with China, stopping them to develop geographical military linkages in the area. Siachen also serves as a watchtower for India to keep a deep watch on Gilgit and Baltistan regions of Pakistan. * If Pakistan gets the location advantage in Siachen, it would become a big threat to India from the west in Ladakh in addition to Chinese threats from Aksai Chin of the east. *Due to its control over Saltoro Ride, India is better placed to strike a bargain while settling bilateral territorial disputes with Pakistan in the future. *Siachen also helps India to keep a close watch on China ’s activities as Beijing has vastly improved its infrastructure in this region. China has developed all weather rail and road links in the Shaksgam region, which was ceded to China by Pakistan in 1960s. *Ceding Indian-controlled Karakoram Pass triangle region to Pakistan would have further strengthened the Sino-Pakistan footprints on these strategic heights. • Why Siachen is such a difficult area to defend? Besides the twin military threats from Pakistan and China, the climate condition is the biggest challenge for the armed forces. Temperature in Siachen glacier in winters drops to below -60 degrees. There are also constant threats of avalanches, crevass...

Why is it difficult to survive in Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield?

Siachen Glacier, located near the Indo-Pak Line of Control, is known to be the highest battlefield in the world. It is the longest glacier in the Karakoram Range, running 78 km long and the second largest in the world. Can you imagine how the soldiers stationed here manage to survive? This highest combat region in the world demands soldiers, who are not just physically but mentally strong as well. It is is not just the harsh weather, but the non-availability of many basic amenities that makes life tougher up there. We cannot even imagine the hardships that the soldiers have to endure to remain active at a height of around 5700 m above sea level. And to get a better level of understanding regarding how difficult it is to survive up there, here are some mind-blowing facts about the Siachen Glacier. Brace yourself! Up there, one can get badly hit by frostbite if their skin touches steel or gun trigger, for a mere 15 seconds. In short, if a soldier touches the gun barrel or gun trigger with bare hands, it can be the biggest mistake of his life, and might result in losing the fingers or toes. For the uninitiated, frostbite is a condition that leads to amputation of toes or fingers when unexpectedly exposed to extreme cold. In severe cases, the organs might just fall off.
