Sita Ramam (2022) Movie Review

An emotional tale of two star-crossed lovers Romance has become inorganic in the present day which is why there is hardly any authentic present-time storytelling that tugs at your heartstrings. Bringing calm to the storm in people’s hearts about romantic movies comes Sita Ramam, a simple and emotional love story. Sita Ramam stars Dulquer Salmaan, the it-boy of the Indian Entertainment Industry as the main lead. Alongside we see Mrunal Thakur and Rashmika Madanna in a story that narrates a simple yet complicated love story of Sita, Ram, and a little girl who changed the lives of these two star-crossed lovers. Sita Ramam tells the story of Ram, an orphan soldier who is doing his duty and serving the country to the best of his ability. After it becomes national knowledge that Ram has no one who writes letters to him, the soldier starts getting letters from all around the world. Overwhelmed by his new-found family members, Ram religiously responds to all letters but one. Among the many letters, he has received is one from Sita, a woman who claims to be Ram’s wife. With no return address in the consistent letters, Ram writes his responses to Sita with the goal of finding her someday and delivering them to her himself. Meanwhile, 20 years later, a young and bratty Pakistani girl named Afreen is tasked with the responsibility to deliver one letter from Ram to Sita in India. Monetarily motivated, she sets out on a mission to deliver the letter to Sita. However, throughout the jour...

Sita Ramam is nothing like the love stories that are told today: Dulquer Salmaan

Director Hanu Raghavapudi’s Sita Ramam promises to give the audience a taste of old-world romance from the ’60s. Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur headline this period love story that also features Rashmika Mandanna, Sumanth, GautamVasudev Menon and Tharun Bhascker in key roles. Dulquer plays an army officer, Ram. “He’s an orphan who’s very happy-go-lucky by nature. As an army man, he’s very patriotic and bound by duty,” explains the actor. “Sita is this girl next door who begins writing letters to Ram while he’s away on duty. She’s independent and progressive, but who she is and why does she fall in love with Ram is what the film is all about,” says Mrunal. Sita Ramam was shot through the pandemic, sometimes in the extreme climates of Kashmir and Spiti Valley. “Anyone watching us on-screen wouldn’t know we were freezing,” says Dulquer, smiling. He adds, “I feel lucky to be part of a story like this. It’s epic, and nothing like the love stories told today. The film is very universal, and it’s just visually spectacular,” says Dulquer. “Yes, roles like these aren’t written every day,” Mrunal chimes in. The film is also releasing in Tamil and Malayalam besides Telugu, and Mrunal is super excited. “I already feel accepted here. This is a film that’s meant to be watched on the big screen. I’m certain that the audience will be floored by this beautiful love story that has all the makings of a classic,” she says, rounding off. 'OTT vs theater' debate: If the streaming platform is...

Sita Ramam movie review: Good looks of Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur hold this dull romantic story together

Premium Sita Ramam movie review: Good looks of Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur hold this dull romantic story together Sita Ramam movie review: The screen presence of Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur does add a little vigour to the otherwise dull narration. The film majorly leverages the good looks of its actors to make it tolerable. Love transcends all barriers, including religion, politics and language. That is the main driving emotion of director Hanu Raghavapudi’s latest romantic movie Afreen is a proud Pakistani, who is politically conditioned to respond negatively to anything Indian. In a fit of anger, she destroys the car of a rich Indian philanthropist in London. The victim of Afreen’s violent action gives her two options: admit her mistake and apologise or pay a million rupees. If she can’t do both, she may end up in jail. Also Read | Afreen agrees to pay the rich man, instead of repenting. So she heads back to Pakistan to meet her wealthy grandfather and pay the fine. The catch is, she hasn’t spoken to him in years due to a disagreement and finds out that he has passed away. Not to worry, her grandfather’s estate is enough to solve her financial problems. Again, there is a catch: She has to first do an errand for him. The mission is simple: take the letter written by an Indian soldier, Ram, to the woman he loves, Sita, in India. If Afreen fails to do this, she can kiss her family’s fortune goodbye. She doesn’t seem to have much of an option now, does she? Afreen t...

Sita Ramam movie review: Dulquer Salmaan

Love is blind, decreed a person who possibly went on to write film scripts. In Sita Ramam, love plays dumb too. Hanu Raghavapudi’s previously released Telugu-language period drama has re-emerged in cinemas in a Hindi dubbed version. Sita Ramam is set between the 1960s and the 1980s, a time of snail mail, steam engines and suspension of disbelief. A handsomely produced and self-consciously epic romance in which lovers strive to be together against the backdrop of momentous events, Sita Ramam is Mani Ratnam and Yash Chopra by way of the Hollywood classic Roman Holiday, with a nod to current Hindu-Muslim tensions. In 1985, Pakistani national Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) arrives in India on the orders of her grandfather Tariq (Sachin Khedekar) to deliver an unposted letter from Ram to his beloved Sita. Afreen’s inheritance depends on her finding Ram or Sita – or both. The letter caps a love story that begins in 1965, when Indian Army officer Ram (Dulquer Salmaan) single-handedly saves a village in Kashmir from Pakistan-aided attackers. Sacks of admiring letters pour in for Ram, including passionate missives from Sitamahalakshmi (Mrunal Thakur). Although they haven’t yet laid eyes on each other, Sita’s forthrightness in declaring that Ram is her desired consort is an irresistible draw for the dashing young man. When he finally tracks Sita down, the sparks fly fast enough for Ram to make wedding plans. But something is holding Sita back – a secret so fanciful that Raghavapudi has ...

An architectural review of Sita Ramam

Directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, Sita Ramam is a musical-romantic-period drama that revolves around three protagonists. As Lt.Ram is set on a journey to find his love Sita, young Afreen is on a mission to find the truth untold. The journey of Ram starts with reading mysterious letters to wandering in the streets and places of Hyderabad . The movie beautifully captures the scenic landmarks of Hyderabad and Kashmir, for which it earned vast attention and recognition. Architectural History as the Teller of Time The architecture in the movie strengthens the plot by evoking a sense of place and revisiting some of the invaluable historical locations. The movie, set in the 1960s and 1980s, recreates various historical locations, such as the houses of Kashmir , the streets and palaces of Hyderabad, the mud-thatch houses of Kaza, Himachal Pradesh, etc. One such example is Charminar Road in Hyderabad. Charminar road recreated_©amazon prime Treasures of Kashmir Kashmir is more than the beautiful snow-clad landscapes. Yet, Kashmir Architecture barely made it to our textbooks! The Sita Ramam makes it up by portraying the architecture of Kashmir at its best. The movie depicts the Hindu-Muslim relationship between the people in the war-conflicted zone of Kashmir. As Lt.Ram serves the Indian army, the visuals do justice in capturing the diffused light of Kashmir in its finest way. The residence of Sita and Ram during their stay in Kashmir, as shown in the film, is Nishati House, Srinagar , a...

Sita Ramam Movie Review: Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur's film aims to be a poignant love story, but falls short

By Janani K: Right from its posters to all the promotional materials, Sita Ramam promised to be an epic love story. Dulquer Salmaan’s charming persona and Mrunal Thakur’s arresting looks screamed romantic. Did Hanu Raghavapudi’s Sita Ramam live up to it? Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) is a student president of Pakistan at a university in London. She sets fire to an expensive car because it belongs to an Indian. Set in the 80s, the film talks about the rivalry between Indians and Pakistanis. She is entrusted with the job of delivering a letter to Sita Mahalakshmi (Mrunal Thakur). Her late grandfather Abdul Tariq (Sachin Khedekar), in his will, wrote that Afreen should deliver the letter written by Lieutenant Ram (Dulquer Salmaan). Who is Ram and how is he related to Sita? What is Afreen’s past and how are Ram and Tariq related? Sita Ramam has answers to these questions. Director Hanu Raghavapudi’s Sita Ramam is a layered story that talks about unconditional love and humanity over war and enmity. The story goes back and forth and Rashmika’s Afreen takes us through the journey of Sita and Ram falling in love with each other. However, this is not a story with shortcomings. The first half of Sita Ramam establishes the conflict between Indians and Pakistanis right from the landscape to the internal politics. In the midst are two characters, Sita and Ram, who are true soulmates. Ram is Mr goody-two-shoes and believes that the world needs love. He is a soldier with a soft corner for h...
