Even a new venue—DY Patil Stadium—hardly made a difference as they managed to score 150-4 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the allotted 20 overs. DC skipper Meg Lanning’s decision to bowl first was vindicated by her bowlers and good fielding efforts. South African Marizanne Kapp, who claimed 5-15 against Gujarat Giants on Saturday, began with a maiden over to struggling RCB captain and opener ADVERTISEMENT Mandhana’s poor show in the tournament continued when pacer Shikha Pandey (3-23) brought an end to her 15-ball eight. Her athletic diving effort at short fine leg off American pacer Tara Norris (1-25) ended Heather Knight’s 11-run knock. However, in her next over, Pandey dropped Ellyse Perry off her own bowling which proved too costly for DC in the end as Perry smashed a 52-ball 67 not out. Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)’s performance in the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) has become the talk of the town due to their losing run in the 2023 season. RCB face UP Warriorz on Friday evening on the back of three successive losses in their campaign so far. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters in a media interaction by Jio Cinema and Sports 18, former Indian cricketer Reema Malhotra shed light on Mandhana’s captaincy in the tournament so far. Malhotra recalled playing against Smrit in domestic competitions, and also mentioned how the 26-year-old led Maharashtra to the final. Backing Mandhana for the role, she added, “So I think questions shouldn’t be raised on her captaincy. If you don’t use your resources well, that’s where the support staff comes into play. If they don’t tell the captain which player can provide what, then that’s were RCB are falling behind.” What does RCB lack in the Women’s Premier League 2023? As per the former Indian player, RCB is heavily lacking the presence of a big name in their coaching staff. “There are big names in the support staff of every team like Jhulan Goswami for MI and Mithali Raj for Gujarat. But RCB have that name missing,” she said. The former cricketer also mentioned that she feels the Bangalore-based franchise has failed to utilize the Indian talent to the maximum. “The likes of Kanika Ahuja and Poonam Khemnar bowl consistently in domestic cricket, but you didn’t bowl them. If you do use them, you w...

WPL 2023: Smriti Mandhana's poor form continues as she falls to spin for fourth time straight

However, Mandhana couldn’t vindicate her decision as she was once again dismissed cheaply by a spinner, for the fourth straight time in the ongoing tournament. On the first ball of the fourth over, in an attempt to get a move on in her innings, she tried to smack Gayakwad over long on but could only manage to get the leading edge which was safely taken by Anjali Sarvani at covers. The southpaw departed after scoring just four runs off six balls, falling prey to reckless shots for yet another time. Mandhana has been dismissed by spinners in all four matches played so far. In the first three matches, she was dismissed by right-handed off spinners Alice Capsey, Hayley Matthews and Ashleigh Gardner respectively, whereas in the fourth game, left-arm orthodox bowler Rajeshwari Gayakwad claimed her wicket. After four innings in WPL 2023, the RCB captain only has 80 runs to her name and has failed miserably in justifying her reputation and the price-tag. Not only her but the entire RCB batting unit is struggling to score as they only have two overall half-centuries in the four matches played so far. RCB'S batting woes continue against UP Warriorz Coming back to RCB’s innings, Sophie Devine and Ellyse Perry came together for the second wicket after losing their skipper early, and managed to put on a 44-run stand in 31 balls. Devine went on to score 36 off 24 while Perry departed after scoring 52 off 39 balls. However, after their partnership ended, no other batter took the onus of ...
