Solang Valley (Manali)

We traveled to Manali in the month of Feb as a family (a couple + two young kids). Solang valley was a top attraction for us. Unfortunately, our experience was underwhelming. We got caught up in the infamous traffic jam on the way to Solang and were stuck in a taxi for close to 4 hours. We also got fleeced by a 'package agent' at a snow dress shop on the way up. My advice to future travelers: 1. Leave as early as possible. Don't listen to your taxi driver who will suggest that we must leave a little late to allow the ice to melt on the roads. waiting for the ice to melt on the roads early may be better than being stuck in traffic jams later in the day. The taxi driver is probably incentivized to make sure his partner package agents/dress shops on the way to Solang are opened by the time we get there. 2. Do NOT purchase a package at the dress shops that your driver will invariably stop on the way to Solang. The rides are dirt cheap and terribly simple to get once on the top. For example, the agent will offer skiing at INR 1000/pax, whereas the true rate with the actual operators on top can be as low as INR 200/pax. The package agent will also promise a 'guide' (appealing for a family with young kids..), but it's not needed; plus, we didn't get the promised guide anyways. It was a total scam. The drivers probably get a cut of the agent's fees. 3. The highlight - and for some reason, all the local adventure operators dissuade visitors from partaking- must be the cable car. Ta...

Gulaba (Manali)

Beautiful place, enjoyed the weather over there, as the temperature when we visited felt like below 0° despite bright sunshine. Being located at an altitude of 9397 ft. and looked after by the administration as nobody lives nearby. At this time we were allowed till this point on the way to Rohtang Pass. If you plan to visit Rohtang pass, there is a check point at Gulaba. You have to have an ONLINE (only) permit to go beyond this point. Ensure you have this permit before hand especially for diesel vehicles (as they have a daily quota for diesel vehicles) and you might have to return back if you don't have this permit. For petrol vehicles the staff will assist for the permit OR you hire a local cab to go up till Rohtang pass. Good to keep this in mind before visiting Rohtang pass. You may want to go up till Rohtang pass and descend into the Lahaul side and come back to Manali via the Atal tunnel. We went here in March when Rohtang was closed due to snow. The trip to Gulaba Camp can easily be combined with other attractions. Our itinerary was: 1. Solang Valley 2. Atal Tunnel 3. Sissu lake 4. Gulaba Camp 5. Kothi The entire trip took us 9 hours including stops at all the places. As for Gulaba, this is as far as the vehicles are allowed to go in the winters.
