Winning the IPL is more difficult than winning World Cup: Sourav Ganguly

By India Today Sports Desk: Sourav Ganguly said that Rohit Sharma was the best option to replace Virat Kohli as the skipper of the Indian team across formats. Recently, Rohit had to face the ire of the netizens after India crashed to a heavy defeat at the hands of Australia in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) at the Kennington Oval in London. India lost the match by 209 runs and lost their fourth ICC final in the last 10 years. However, Ganguly reckoned that Rohit is still the best option to lead India at the highest level. He said that having captained Mumbai Indians (MI) to five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles, Rohit has the ingredients to be a successful skipper. Ganguly, who previously worked as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), backed Rohit, saying that winning the IPL is more difficult than winning the World Cup. Rohit is the best for the job “The selectors needed a captain after Virat left and Rohit was the best that time. He had won 5 IPL trophies and done well at the international level as well; he won the Asia Cup. He was the best option. India also played in the final of the Test championship, although we lost. “Even two years ago, we lost the WTC final. We reached the semis of the T20 World Cup. So, the selectors picked that person who was the best for the job,” Ganguly was quoted as saying to Aaj Tak. Ganguly was of the opinion that even as it needs 4-5 matches for teams to advance to World Cup semis, sides nee...

"If You Ask Me...": Sourav Ganguly's Honest Take On Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid's Future

The duo of Rohit and Dravid took charge after India were knocked out of the T20 World Cup in 2021. However, the team's fate has remained the same as they are still in search of their next ICC trophy. Team India won their last ICC title back in 2013, where they defeated England to lift the Champions Trophy. "It's a selector's job at the end of the day but how does social media influence? Virat himself didn't want to captain Test cricket two years ago. If you ask me who should be and will be India's captain and coach? Rohit and Rahul that's the right way of all," said Ganguly. "Absolutely, at least till the World Cup, this will continue. Well, I don't know what's in Rohit's mind after the World Cup and what he wants to do. At the moment the coach and captain are the two best for India and I wish them all the luck," he added. Earlier, Dravid had expressed disappointment after India's loss and stated that things could have been different if they would have got three weeks' time to practice. "Never going to be happy with the prep as a coach (enough preparation time?) . But that's the reality we are faced with. Coming here three weeks earlier, having a practice game would be ideal. But we have to make do with what we can. Don't think we should make excuses," Dravid told Star Sports after the match. Australia were clearly the better team on all fronts while India had only themselves to blame for yet another loss in a global event. India's last ICC title came way back in 2013 and ...

Sourav Ganguly to continue as chairman of ICC's Men's Cricket Committee: Reports

Ganguly finished his BCCI presidential term last month after reports emerged that he was not handed a second term despite his keenness to continue in the role. According to PTI, the 50-year-old was informed that there is no precedence of giving a second term to the board president. Sourav Ganguly Profile

Some felt he couldn't play the bouncer, others swore that he was God on the off-side; some laughed at his lack of athleticism, others took immense pride in his ability to galvanise a side. Sourav Ganguly's ability to polarise opinion led to one of the most fascinating dramas in Indian cricket. Yet, nobody can dispute that he was India's most successful Test captain - forging a winning unit from a bunch of talented, but directionless, individuals - and nobody can argue about him being one of the greatest one-day batsmen of all time. Despite being a batsman who combined grace with surgical precision in his strokeplay, his career had spluttered to a standstill before being resurrected by a scintillating hundred on debut at Lord's in 1996. Later that year, he was promoted to the top of the order in ODIs and, along with Sachin Tendulkar, formed one of the most destructive opening pairs in history. When he took over the captaincy after the match-fixing exposes in 2000, he quickly proved to be a tough, intuitive and uncompromising leader. Under his stewardship India started winning Test matches away, and put together a splendid streak that took them all the way to the World Cup final in 2003. Later that year, in Australia, an unexpected and incandescent hundred at Brisbane set the tone for the series where India fought the world's best team to a standstill. Victory in Pakistan turned him into a cult figure but instead of being a springboard for greater things, it was the peak of ...

'I Want Him To Play Test Cricket': Sourav Ganguly Appeal To Team India Star After WTC Final Loss

Even as India have failed to win an International Cricket Council (ICC) in the last 10 years, former Team India skipper Sourav Ganguly remains optimistic of the team's future. The ex-BCCI President warned against drawing any sort of conclusions after the side succumbed to yet another defeat in a major ICC event. As Indian fans were hoping for their decade-long wait to end for a world title, they were completely outplayed by Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, losing the match by 209 runs. Post the defeat, Ganguly has made an appeal to a star Indian cricketer. While the Prince of Calcuttasaid that it is not yet time for the team management to look beyond Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for now, he hoped to see the return of all-rounder Hardik Pandya into the red-ball scheme of things. "Let's not jump to conclusions due to just one loss, India will always have talent. And I don't think it is time to look beyond Virat (Kohli) or (Cheteshwar) Pujara. Virat is just 34," Ganguly said on India Today. "India has enormous reserves. When you look at some of the performances. I don't consider IPL performances if we are sticking to Test cricket. In domestic cricket there are some fantastic players and you will only find out when you give them opportunities. Whether it be Jaiswal or Patidar, Abhimanyu Easwaran from Bengal scores a lot of runs. Shubman Gill is young, Ruturaj Gaikwad and I hope Hardik Pandya is listening. I want to see him play Test cricket, especially...
