This incident is only the latest that shows how the airline has been marred by troubles. The DGCA had recently extended the 50% cap on SpiceJet flights by another month. The cap was imposed in July after a series of incidents that indicated poor safety norms being followed. According to reports, the airline has seen at least eight aircraft-related incidents this year. SpiceJet has been facing liquidity issues since quite some time. It posted a net loss of Rs 789 crore in the June quarter as well as Rs 458 crore for the quarter ended March 2022. In September, it sent as many as 80 pilots on Leave without pay for 3 months.

Patna

During rotation of the SpiceJet flight (Boeing 737-800), the cockpit crew suspected a bird hit on Engine No.1. Since the crew did not observe any abnormality aircraft continued to fly. After take off the Cabin crew informed pilots about sparks coming from Engine one, and then the pilot returned the flight to Patna following engine failure protocol. Chandrashekhar Singh, Patna District Magistrate said, as reported by ANI, "The Delhi-bound flight had returned to Patna airport after locals noticed a fire in the aircraft and informed district and airport officials. All 185 passengers were safely deboarded. The reason is a technical glitch, engineering team analysing further."

A SpiceJet flight from Goa to Hyderabad made an emergency landing at Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, officials said. The pilot of the flight SG 3735 noticed smoke and alerted the Air Traffic Controller (ATC), which in turn alerted the ground staff. The aircraft made a safe landing on Wednesday night.

A Hyderabad airport official said there were 86 passengers onboard the Q400 aircraft VT-SQB and that due to the emergency landing, as many as nine flights were diverted on Wednesday night after the incident at around 11 pm. SpiceJet has been facing operational and financial headwinds in recent times, and it is already under enhanced surveillance of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The regulator had also directed the airline to operate only 50 per cent of its total flights till October 29. On Thursday, the DGCA official said the regulator is probing the incident. "SpiceJet Q400 aircraft operating from Goa to Hyderabad landed safely at its destination on October 12 after smoke was observed in the cabin during descent. Passengers were safely disembarked," an airline spokesperson said. According to the DGCA official, the plane made an emergency landing due to smoke observed in the cockpit. On July 27, DGCA directed SpiceJet to operate a maximum of 50 per cent of its flights, which were approved in the summer schedule for a period of eight weeks owing to a series of incidents involving its flights. Last month, the restrictions were extended till October 29. "The plane landed in Karachi 0803 am (local time), 53 minutes after being airborne. It has been on-ground for the past four hours. Passengers are being looked after. The plane has been parked in the designated area where engineers are assessing the problem," Pakistan's civil aviation authority (CAA) official said. On July 2, SpiceJet said its flight heading to Jabalpur returned to Delhi on Saturday after crew members observed smoke in the cabin at around 5,000-feet altitude. There was oil leakage in one of the engines of the Q400 aircraft and that is likely the reason for smoke in the plane, officials of aviation regulator DGCA said after preliminary investigation. Last month, SpiceJet’s Delhi-bound aircraft carrying over 185 passengers caught fire soon after taking off from the Patna airport and hence had to make an emergency landing minutes later.
