Sports in 2022: Here's what to look forward to

NEW DELHI: The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over but the world seems to be adapting to a life with the dreaded virus and as this churning continues, sports is set to be a major source of joy in 2022 with several big events lined up. Here is a look at some of the extravaganzas that will be keenly anticipated in India and across the world apart from the usual roster of annual tournaments like the tennis Grand Slams and the badminton calendar. India's tour of South Africa (December 26 to January 23): An engrossing Test series is currently underway in which India have made a winning start. The three-match rubber will be followed by as many ODIs in which India will get to see K L Rahul assume the leadership role for the first time after a hamstring injury ruled Rohit Sharma out. KL Rahul (Photo by Mark Kolbe/Getty Images) Under-19 Men's ODI World Cup in the West Indies (January 15 to February 5): Delhi batter Yash Dhull would be leading the Indian Colts as they look to add a fifth title to the nation's kitty. A total of 16 teams will fight it out over 48 matches in the premier age group showpiece. ICC Women's ODI World Cup in New Zealand (March 4 to April 3): India would be a contender in the mega-event which was postponed for a year because of the pandemic. It would be a swansong for 39-year-old India skipper Mithali Raj, who would be aiming to leave the big stage with a bang after a stellar career during which she has been nothing short of a trailblazer for women's cricket i...

Asia Cup 2022: India still in it, but only just

Asia Cup 2022 Scenario: India’s second defeat in three days in the Super Four stage has not exactly eliminated them from the Asia Cup, but left them precariously dependent on results of matches not involving them. Needless to say, they need to beat Afghanistan on Thursday, that too by as convincing a margin as possible. But the result of that match could very well be of only academic interest as far as qualification for Sunday’s final is concerned as India could well be out of the reckoning before taking the field. That’s because Pakistan face Afghanistan in Sharjah on Wednesday, and a win for Babar Azam’s team will put them out of India’s reach. For that reason, With Sri Lanka already with two Super Four wins, that will confirm a Pakistan-Lanka title clash. Even if Afghanistan manage to beat Pakistan and then lose to India, India will still depend on Sri Lanka beating Pakistan on Friday. When India captain Rohit Sharma was asked about the prospect of India Pakistan final, “hoga hoga kyun tension le rahe ho (Will happen, why are you taking tension?” Rohit saying India vs Pak hoga 😉 — Vimal कुमार (@Vimalwa) That will seal the Lankans’ spot in the final with three consecutive wins, and the other three teams with one win each, with net run rate being the deciding criterion.

Indian sports news wrap, December 26

FOOTBALL Host Kerala opened its campaign in the Santosh Trophy football qualifying tournament with a thumping 7-0 victory against Rajasthan at the Corporation Stadium on Monday. Kerala, which had triumphed in the tournament’s final phase at Manjeri back in April, was far too good for its northern Indian rival on a sweltering afternoon. It led 5-0 at half-time. Kerala went ahead in the sixth minute through Nijo Gilbert, who converted a superb cross from the left flank by M. Viknesh. Six minutes later, Viknesh himself scored, off a long through ball from Hrishi Dhath. The floodgates were now truly opened. Kerala continued to score almost at will. Earlier, in the opening match, Jammu & Kashmir defeated Bihar 2-0, through goals from Aakif Javaid and Faisal Thakur. The results: Kerala 7 (Nijo Gilbert 6, M. Viknesh 12, 20, B. Naresh 23 & 36, Riswan Ali 55 & 81) bt Rajasthan 0. Jammu & Kashmir 2 (Faisal Thakur 38, Aakif Javaid 58) bt Bihar 0. -P. K. Ajith Kumar Gokulam Kerala and coach Towa part ways Gokulam Kerala and coach Richard Towa have parted ways, midway through the I-League season. The Cameroonian has been relieved of his duties and a new coach, possibly from Europe, is expected to take charge soon, maybe even before Gokulam’s next match, against Churchill Brothers at Manjeri on January 8. The defending champion has had a disappointing campaign thus far under Towa. It is lying fourth in the table with 15 points. Though it is only four points shy of leader Sreenidi Deccan...

As Covid wave dips, IPL 2022 likely in India

The 2022 Indian Premier League is all set to be held in India. According to a top BCCI official, the cricket board has taken a decision in this regard. Asked if the IPL could go overseas this year, the BCCI official told The Indian Express: “It will be in India.” With the third wave of Covid tapering and schools, colleges and other educational institutes are reopening in the states, the BCCI is confident of organising this year’s IPL in India, bar any unforeseen circumstances in the future. For the last two years, the tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates. The 2021 IPL actually had 29 games in India before its Covid-forced postponement and the subsequent relocation to UAE. However, the BCCI feels that unlike last year, when the Covid cases were rising in April-May, the situation this time around is different. The The BCCI kept South Africa as back-up options and when in December last year, the third wave of Covid was reaching its peak, it felt like, yet again the IPL would move out of India. But things have changed since. About a fortnight ago, during the IPL governing council’s meeting with the franchise owners, India emerged as a preferred choice to host the IPL this year, although the consensus among the franchise owners was to organise it in Maharashtra only, to shun air travel. Maharashtra has four venues, three in

GOLF Lahiri handles rain and cold to rise to 10th at Wells Fargo India's Anirban Lahiri handled tough windy, cold and wet conditions well for 16 holes before dropping a double bogey to card 2-under 68 in the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship. At 4-under, the Indian is T-10, up from overnight T-38, as he chases another good week on the PGA Tour. Lahiri, just four behind leader Jason Day at one stage, is now six behind at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. The former No. 1 player Day shot 3-under 67 in steady rain and stretched his lead over the field to three shots as he attempts his first victory in four years. Day is 10-under 130 through two rounds and Max Homa is second at 7-under. Denny McCarthy (69), Luke List (66), Kurt Kitayama (67), and James Hahn (68) are tied for 3rd at 6-under. The weather took a toll as even the shots from the first cut of the rough saw water splashing off and the divots were big. Lahiri did well to hang in with six birdies, two bogeys and a double. “Tough day, it was a grind. Weather was obviously difficult, you have to battle the elements. The golf course is hard and long enough to begin with," said Lahiri. ALSO READ | "I played really, really well, but missed a couple of putts. I think I could have avoided some of the bogeys that I made. Then right in the end on the 17th, I just lost control of the ball due to the heavy rain and the gust that we got at that point of time." Lahiri hit 12 of the 18 greens in regulation. After a string o...

Manchester City and Inter Millan will face off in the UEFA Champions League 2022-23 final at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, on Sunday. The Manchester City vs Inter Milan UCL final is scheduled to start at 12:30 AM in India. The football match will be live streamed and broadcasted live on TV. For Manchester City, this will be their second UEFA Champions League final in three years after falling short in the 2020-21 title clash against Chelsea. Manchester City, who have already won the English Premier League and FA Cup this season, are looking to complete the treble. If they win Sunday’s UCL final to secure their first European title, the Cityzens will emulate their arch-rivals Manchester United’s feat from 1998-99. Manchester United, under Sir Alex Ferguson, won the EPL, FA Cup and Champions League in the 1998-99 season. Till date, it is the only instance of any team in English football winning the treble. A win in the UCL final will also make Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola only the second manager to win three or more UCL trophies after Carlo Ancelotti (four). The Spanish manager won two UEFA Champions League finals with Barcelona (2008–09 and 2010–11). En route to the final, Manchester City beat European heavyweights Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals before knocking out last season’s Meanwhile, Inter Milan, who have won the UEFA Champions League trophy thrice (1963-64, 1965, 2009-10) are chasing their fourth title, having last won the European crown...

2022 Rewind: Everything big that happened in Indian sports

2022 was a year full of action for Indian sports lovers. Cricket remained to many the main attraction with the Indian Premier League and T20 World Cup ruling the chart. However, interest in the country’s reigning Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra never faded with his exploits in the javelin world stretching into the new season. This renewed focus on other sports with Commonwealth Games and various World Championships brought medals in galore. Neeraj Chopra in elite league It’s a historic World Championship Medal for Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra wins Silver Medal in men’s Javelin Throw final of the Congratulations India!!!!!!! — Athletics Federation of India (@afiindia) Competing after a gap, Neeraj Chopra started the season with a bang as he threw the javelin as long as 89.30 metre at Parvo Nurmi Games in Finland for an improved national record. A throw bigger than his Tokyo Olympic best (87.58m) still wasn’t good enough for gold as local boy Oliver Helander threw his personal best of 89.83m. The first gold of the season came soon after as he threw 86.69m for the gold at the Kuortane Games. Good show at the two competitions prepared him well for the Stockholm Diamond League with the expectations of 90m soaring him. The 24-year-old man from Panipat came mighty close as well with an 89.94m throw. However, not breaching the mark did cost him the spot as his now arch-rival Anderson Peters beat him to the gold with a 90.31m throw. The rivalry continued at the World Athletics Cha...
