At that point you wondered if they'd get to 100. But Wanindu Hasaranga and Bhanuka Rajapaksa refused to go into their shells, and attacked their way out of the situation - Hasaranga making the momentum with his 36 off 21, before Rajapaksa produced Sri Lanka's innings of the tournament, hitting 71 not out off 46 in the end (he was dropped a couple of times in the last few balls, but had earned that luck). Sri Lanka's bowling was led, completely unexpectedly by Pramod Madushan, who took two wickets in his first over (this is just the second T20I he's played.) The quicks and the spinners kept things tight in the first 10, and when Pakistan tried to explode in the second half of the innings, Sri Lanka fielded like mademen, catching everything that came their way, and saving runs all over the field. Three wickets in five balls, and Sri Lanka have one had on that trophy. He first has Rizwan caught at deep midwicket - Danushka Gunathilaka taking an excellent catch, having fielded beautifully right through the innings. Next he slips a fast googly into Asif Ali's stumps, as the batter plays a huuuge shot across the line. Madushan, who wasn't even supposed to be in the squad for this tournament, had Dushmantha Chameera or Binura Fernando been fit, is bowling his heart out in the final. Iftikhar Ahmed, who was getting into serious hitting form, tries to launch him over deep midwicket, but can only sky it to deep square leg, where sub fielder Ashen Bandara gets under a hiiiigh swirlin...

10.43pm And as Dasun Shanaka heads out to collect the Asia Cup trophy from Shammi Silva, it is time for us to say goodbye at ESPNcricinfo. Hope you enjoyed our coverage from the UAE. Sri Lanka win their home Asia Cup, the rest of the SL players join Shanaka to celebrate with the trophy, the fireworks light up behind them again, the glitter goes up to the sky as well. See you soon for more cricket. On behalf of everyone who brought the action to you, this is Sreshth Shah saying thank you for joining us. Take care! 10.40pm Now onto the winners in this presentation. Chris Silverwood, the SL coach, is invited to collect special-edition gifts for the Sri Lanka squad. Winning captain Dasun Shanaka is then called up, and here he is for a chat: "I must thank the crowd, they were supporting us massively. And also to the fans at home, hope we made them proud. (Toss result) If I go back to IPL 2021, it was Chennai who won the final after batting first. These youngsters know conditions and situation really well. After losing five wickets, Hasaranga-Rajapaksa made a difference. Up front, Chamika and DDS batted really well too. (Chat at halfway stage) The last-ball six in the 20th over was the turnaround point. 170 is always a tricky total. (What did you tell bowlers?) It was all about nerves. I knew the youngster can always deliver. He can go wrong at the start but we have given him the trust and belief. (Loss in the first game, today the winners... what was the discussion that day?) I...

Explained: 2023 Asia Cup Likely To Be Moved From Pakistan to Sri Lanka, but Why?

To put it simply, and briefly – because India were unwilling to travel to the neighbouring nation for the competition. Now, let’s focus on the sequence of events. Back in October 2022, the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah announced that India will not be going to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, and subsequently, it has to be relocated to a neutral venue. “I have decided that we will play at a neutral venue. A neutral venue for the Asia Cup is not unprecedented, and we have decided that we will not travel to Pakistan,” he said. Earlier this year, in January, Shah, who also is the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), announced the upcoming two-year calendar of Asian cricket events, wherein it was mentioned that India and Pakistan have been placed in the same group for the 2023 Asia Cup – with one fixture guaranteed between the two giants. According to this hybrid model, the tournament would have been played across two venues. All of the matches involving India were to be held in a neutral venue, with the United Arab Emirates then being touted as a possible candidate, while the other matches were to be held in Pakistan, in adherence to the initial plans. The PCB sustained a blow when reportedly, barring India, three other nations – Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, rejected the proposed hybrid model. The competition being played in two nations would have meant that any team that plays with India would have had to travel from Pakista...

Asia Cup 2023 set to be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka

The PCB's proposed hybrid model for the Asia Cup is likely to be approved by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), with Sri Lanka as the neutral venue where India can play their games. The model sees four - and possibly five - of the tournament's 13 games being played in Pakistan. All the India-Pakistan games will be played in Sri Lanka, as will the final if India is involved. The likely approval represents a significant breakthrough in an impasse which has not only dragged on for some time but has also threatened fallout for ICC events, most pressingly the World Cup in India this year but also the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. There is a possibility now that an agreement here could ease Pakistan's path to traveling to India for the World Cup. The PCB head Najam Sethi had presented details of the hybrid model to Pankaj Khimji, head of Oman Cricket and the ACC's vice-president, in a meeting in Dubai a couple of weeks ago. It was the solution the PCB had proposed to account for the fact that India will not travel to Pakistan for the tournament because of ongoing political tensions between the governments of the two countries. Those political ties have led to a long and cumbersome path to this solution - the PCB, as appointed hosts, have been keen to ensure that at least part of the tournament is played in Pakistan. The UAE was in the running as a neutral venue, and Sri Lanka was keen to host the entire tournament. At one stage the BCB and SLC A total of 13 matches, including...

Pakistan and Sri Lanka to host Asia Cup 2023 as ACC to approve PCB's hybrid model

Image Source : TWITTER Pakistan and Sri Lanka will host Asia Cup 2023 games In a big development on Asia Cup 2023, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are set to host the 16th edition of the tournament in September. Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Jay Shah is expected to approve Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) hybrid model and is likely to make an official announcement on Tuesday, June 13. In almost a six-month battle, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to agree on a hybrid model. According to a report from a PTI, Pakistan will be hosting all non-India matches while Sri Lanka will host India-Pakistan fixtures and India's all Super 4 games. The report also adds that Pakistan will travel to India for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and have no more problem playing its matches at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. According to an ACC board member, Oman Cricket Board chief Pankaj Khimji solved the hosting issue after participating countries opposed PCB's hybrid model. He revealed that Pakistan vs Nepal, Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka, and Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh matches will be played at Lahore's Gadaffi Stadium while two India vs Pakistan matches and four Super 4 matches will be held in Galle or Pallekele. "Oman Cricket board chief Pankaj Khimji, one of the respected ACC executive board members, was entrusted to find a solution as most countries didn't want a Hybrid Model. But as of now four non-India games -- Pakistan vs Nepal, Bangladesh vs Afghani...
