India Unveils the World's Tallest Statue Amid Controversy

The world’s tallest statue was unveiled today in the western Indian state of Gujarat at a VIP ceremony officiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At 597 feet, the sculpture is almost twice the height of the Statue of Liberty and dwarfs the Spring Temple Buddha in China, until today the world’s tallest statue, by 177 feet. Named the Statue of Unity, the giant new sculpture immortalizes Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an Indian independence leader and the country’s first deputy prime minister; it was inaugurated on what would have been his 143rd birthday. As Patel’s bronze-clad likeness gazed over the horizon at Kevadiya Colony, about 260 miles from the Bollywood capital of Mumbai, military aircraft flew overhead, scattering flower petals on the ground and tracing the colors of the Indian flag in plumes across the sky. “This statue is an answer to all those who question India’s power and might,” Modi said in his address, before heading to take part in religious rites to mark the unveiling. “It is my honor to be able to dedicate this statue to the nation.” But not everyone in the nation is thrilled by the gargantuan effigy, which took 33 months to build, at a cost of $400 million, in a public-private venture that was partially crowdfunded. Just hours before the unveiling, close to the site, crowds of farmers and members of tribal communities chanted slogans and tore down posters of the statue in protest against what they see a colossal waste of money. ‘They don’t have a past to in...

The World's Tallest Statue Finally Opens After Exactly Four Years of Construction

As the saying goes, records are made to be broken. And true to form, there's a new world's tallest statue. Earlier today, the Indian government unveiled Statue of Unity, a 597-foot-tall structure that honors Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the founding fathers of modern-day India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the October 31 celebration (selected since it's both Patel’s birthday and National Unity Day) to unveil the statue, which towers over the Narmada River in the western state of Gujarat. Photo: Getty Images/Sam Panthaky It took exactly four years for the statue (which is made from steel, reinforced concrete, and bronze cladding) to surpass the former record holder, China's 420-foot-tall Spring Temple Buddha. The Statue of Unity cost some $420 million to complete and was constructed by Larsen & Toubro. The Mumbai-based firm is one of the largest in the country, and has been responsible for the construction of such high profile projects as New Delhi's International Airport and the Lotus Temple. The sculpture was designed by Ram V. Sutar, a 93-year-old Indian sculptor who is among the most celebrated designers in the region. Anytime a statue is erected in the name of unity, similarities to New York's State of Liberty are bound to follow. And that's certainly the case for India's Statue of Unity. While the 305-foot-tall Statue of Liberty pales in height to its Indian counterpart, the two do ...

Just who is this man being honored? Patel was a champion of India's independence from Britain and served as the first deputy prime minister and home minister of independent India. Raised in the countryside of Gurajat, the state where the Statue of Unity is located, he was one of Gandhi's earliest lieutenants and staged peaceful protests against British rule. He is also credited with uniting the 565 self-governing states that existed after British rule ended. This effectively pulled together the country to form the India we know today. To celebrate his achievements, it was announced in 2013 that a statue would be erected in his honor. Ram V. Sutar, a prolific Indian sculptor, had already designed a statue of the leader for theAhmedabad International Airport and it was decided that the Statue of Unity would be an enlarged version of that sculpture. With a height of 182 meters (597 feet), an incredible amount of materials and engineering skills were needed to create the statue. The sculpture's height was specifically chosen to reflect the 182 seats of the Gurajat Legislative Assembly. The enormous sculpture sits on a base that is 50 meters (190 feet) and allows the figure to almost hover above the landscape. That brings the Statue of Unity's total height to 232 meters (787 feet) The sculpture is so large that there was no foundry in India equipped to cast the bronze pieces that clad the steel and concrete core. The pieces were eventually cast in China, based on 3D scans, and ...
