Photos: The 15 Tallest Statues in the World

With the unveiling of the Statue of Unity in India today, there is a new name topping the list of the tallest statues in the world. The new monument to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stands 597 feet (182 meters) tall, overtaking the previous record holder, the 420-foot (128-meter) Spring Temple Buddha, in China’s Lushan County. Using At No. 39 is the Monument of the African Renaissance, a 161-foot-tall (49-meter-tall) statue that sits on a volcanic hill overlooking Dakar, the capital of Senegal, photographed on September 27, 2017. Designed by the Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby, the monument was built by a North Korean company and completed in 2010. Though the monument does stand at the peak of a 2,300-foot-tall (700-meter-tall) mountain, the statue itself only measures 98 feet (30 meters) tall, and comes in at No. 135 on the list of tallest statues.

Just who is this man being honored? Patel was a champion of India's independence from Britain and served as the first deputy prime minister and home minister of independent India. Raised in the countryside of Gurajat, the state where the Statue of Unity is located, he was one of Gandhi's earliest lieutenants and staged peaceful protests against British rule. He is also credited with uniting the 565 self-governing states that existed after British rule ended. This effectively pulled together the country to form the India we know today. To celebrate his achievements, it was announced in 2013 that a statue would be erected in his honor. Ram V. Sutar, a prolific Indian sculptor, had already designed a statue of the leader for theAhmedabad International Airport and it was decided that the Statue of Unity would be an enlarged version of that sculpture. With a height of 182 meters (597 feet), an incredible amount of materials and engineering skills were needed to create the statue. The sculpture's height was specifically chosen to reflect the 182 seats of the Gurajat Legislative Assembly. The enormous sculpture sits on a base that is 50 meters (190 feet) and allows the figure to almost hover above the landscape. That brings the Statue of Unity's total height to 232 meters (787 feet) The sculpture is so large that there was no foundry in India equipped to cast the bronze pieces that clad the steel and concrete core. Upon its inauguration in October 2018, the Statue of Unity officially became the tallest statue in the world. Reaching a height of 597 feet (182 m), the colossal statue of the Indian statesman and independence activist Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. In 2010, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to build a statue in honor of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875 –1950), one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India. And while the announcement of a new statue typically evokes a few nods and disinterested shrugs, this announcement immediately fired the imaginations of people around the world. The Statue of Unity was to be the tallest statue in the world, twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty and surpassing the previous record holder, the Construction began in October 2014 at a site on the banks of the Narmada River in Gujarat. In charge of the project was Larsen & Toubro, one of India’s leading construction companies. The cost: a cool US$420 million. Workers labored for about four years to build this gargantuan statue. The materials used included about 1,800 tons of bronze, 20,000 tons of reinforced steel and more than 7,000 tons of structured steel, with around 235,000 cubic yards of concrete filling the statue’s interior. And to prevent a very embarrassing and costly disaster, the statue was built to withstand winds of up to 140 miles per hour and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale.
