Here, we discuss some of the enhancements of the STP protocol: PortFast, UplinkFast, BackboneFast, and LoopGuard. In STP, the root and designated ports are put in a forwarding state, and the other ports are put in a blocking state. PortFast causes a switch port to enter the forwarding state immediately, bypassing the listening and learning states. We can configure a port as an edge port if it is attached to a LAN that has no other switches attached. Edge ports transition directly to the forwarding state without waiting for the STP protocol to converge. Without PortFast, a switch port lingers in the discarding and learning states before starting to forward frames, which can cause important frames to get dropped. The delay can cause a client machine to time out while waiting to receive an IP address from a DHCP server. We can configure an access-layer switch with the UplinkFast feature in Cisco switches. It improves the convergence time of STP in case of failure of an uplink to the distribution layer switch. With the default STP parameters, an uplink failure towards the root bridge is recovered by STP protocol in 30 to 50 seconds.
