Football, Intercontinental Cup 2023: Sunil Chhetri hits late winner as India qualify for final

The Indian senior men’s team edged Vanuatu 1-0 to book their place in the Intercontinental Cup final on Monday, June 12, 2023, at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. It was the Blue Tigers’ seventh straight win on home soil, a run that includes six clean sheets. After a dominating 80 minutes in which the hosts created countless opportunities but lacked the cutting edge, it was Sunil Chhetri’s sensational 86th international goal for India which ultimately settled the game. Earlier in the day, Mongolia held Lebanon to a goalless draw after a gritty defensive display, which meant three points for India were enough to seal their final berth. Head coach Igor Stimac made as many as nine changes to the side that overcame Mongolia 2-0 on Friday. Only captain Sunil Chhetri and Sandesh Jhingan, who earned his 50th cap, maintained their place in the eleven which also had Nandhakumar Sekar making his senior international debut. . The first half was a story of misfiring shots from the Blue Tigers. With Vanuatu sitting tight at the back in the opening stages, Liston Colaco and Nandhakumar shot over the bar from long range. Sunil Chhetri also missed a couple of headed opportunities - first, heading over a good-looking Kotal cross from the right before failing to properly connect with Mahesh’s looping delivery just before half-time. Mahesh, handed his first start for the Blue Tigers by Stimac, was the architect of most of India’s opportunities. The East Bengal man slipped in a great throu...

Intercontinental Cup: Sunil Chhetri on target for India as they beat Vanuatu 1

India earned their second win in as many games in the Intercontinental Cup on Monday evening as they beat Vanuatu 1-0 in a hard-earned win, thanks to Sunil Chhetri's wonderful 81st-minute strike. The match was India's second successive game at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, following their 2-0 win over Mongolia last Friday. READ: With 62% of ball possession and a tireless focus on creating scoring opportunities, India dominated the first half of the match. Vanuatu, ranked 164th in the world, didn't manage to get a single shot on goal during the first half due to their largely ineffective attempts and being constantly under the cosh against a visibly superior India side. Nandhakumar Sekar, making his debut, made a great impact and was a threat from midfield, creating a lot of opportunities from the middle-third and constantly finding ways to link up with the forward line. Despite taking part in a number of exciting build-up plays, Sekar blew a guilt-edged opportunity in the 36th minute from a delicious Mahesh Naorem through ball. India kept up the pressure as the second half went on, but Vanuatu's staunch defence halted their advances. Chhetri came close to breaking the deadlock as a sumptuous cross from Naorem evaded the defenders in the box on its way to Chhetri, but the India captain misjudged his leap and missed a golden opportunity. SO CLOSE!!! 😱🤯 Naorem’s cross was almost perfectly placed as Watch Live on Coach Igor Stimac decide to shake things up with ...

Sunil Chhetri Biography, Medals, Records and Age

Biography The all-time top scorer for the Indian football team and its captain for the better part of a decade, Sunil Chhetri is one of the most decorated footballers in India. Chhetri’s 80 goals for the Indian national team also makes him the second-most prolific international goal-scorer among active male footballers, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and ahead of the legendary Lionel Messi. Born in Secunderabad in then Andhra Pradesh on August 3, 1984, football came naturally to Sunil Chhetri. His army man father KB Chhetri had played the sport in his younger days while mother Sushila had played for the Nepal national football team. As an army kid, Sunil Chhetri travelled the country, changing schools frequently. The one thing that did not change was his passion for football. Chhetri excelled in football for every school he represented but strangely never considered becoming a professional footballer. His only motivation was to use the sport as a means to gain entry to a reputed college and continue his education. Destiny had different plans for Sunil Chhetri though. A 16-year-old Sunil Chhetri had enrolled for the 12th grade at a college in New Delhi when he was called up to the Indian team to play in the Asian School Championships in Kuala Lumpur in 2001. As luck would have it, Mohun Bagan – one of India’s oldest and most famous football clubs – spotted Sunil Chhetri’s talent and signed him for the upcoming domestic season. He has not looked back since. Sunil Chhetri disp...

Another of Naorem's measured crosses from the right found Chhetri in the clear in the 40th minute, but the ball flew inches above the India captain's head with only the custodian ahead. With halftime approaching, India pressed for a goal and were all over Vanuatu's final third, but Igor Stimac's side failed to score.

All Eyes On Sunil Chhetri As India Look To Regain Intercontinental Cup

In the last leg of his glittering career, Indian talisman Sunil Chhetri will be the cynosure of all eyes as the Blue Tigers look to regain the Intercontinental Cup, which begins here on Friday. While Lebanon and Vanuatu will play in the tournament opener, hosts India will take on Mongolia in the day's second match, kicking off their campaign against the lowest-ranked team (No 183) in the tournament. The Blue Tigers, ranked 101 in the FIFA rankings, will enter the tournament as the second-highest-ranked team, with Lebanon (99) ahead of them by two places. With 84 goals to his name from 131 international appearances, the most by an Indian, Chhetri has set numerous records over the last two decades. As far as the tournament is concerned, no player has made an impact like the Indian skipper who has scored 11 of India's 16 goals in the event. Chhetri is the only player to score a hat-trick in the competition. "Sunil has always been a role model and a leader in every sense for the boys and girls. But he's not only talking, he's showing that with his test results once again," Stimac had said. "In this camp, he was in top-five positions in all the tests we executed. So that's the best way of leading the team and showing them how much it can be done. "Never mind the age, never mind the month or the year, so let alone what he speaks what he does on the pitch and how he works. That's what is the most important thing," the coach was effusive in his praise for Chhetri. The Blue Tigers ...
