SURAH AL

Interpretation In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the All-Compassionate, • May both hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined are they! • His wealth has not availed him, nor his gains. • He will enter a flaming Fire to roast; • 4-5. And his wife, carrier of firewood, Around her neck will be a halter of strongly twisted rope. This surah is also called Surah “al-Masad” or “Lahab.” It is one of the surahs revealed during the early days of the Meccan period. It relates the destruction due to enmity and hostility against religion, in particular Abu Lahab which means “flame” and his wife, the enemies of Islam who entered the flames of suffering in this world before entering Hell, the eternal abode of flames. Abu Lahab’s fate, and the fact that he would die in the state of disbelief was declared many years before. The reason for its revelation Bukhari, Tirmidhi and many other sources of the Prophetic traditions report from a narration by Ibn Abbas that when the verse “And warn your nearest kinsfolk” (ash-Shuara 26:214) was revealed, the Prophet proclaimed “O people, awaken to the calamity of the morning!” The people asked “Who is saying?” and began to gather around him. The Prophet asked them: “If I were to tell you that the enemy on horseback was waiting to attack, would you believe me?” They replied: “We have never heard anything from you but the truth.” The Prophet said: “Then I warn you that you are heading for a grave torment.” Whereupon Abu Lahab said: “May you perish! ...

Surah Masad Ayat 5 (111:5 Quran) With Tafsir

Ala-Maududi (111:5) upon her neck shall be a rope of palm-fibre. [5] 5 The word used for her neck is jeed, which in Arabic means a neck decorated with an ornament. Saeed bin al- Musayyab, Hasan Basri and Qatadah say that she wore a valuable necklace and used to say: By Lat and Uzza, I will sell away this necklace and spend the price to satisfy my enmity against Muhammad (peace be upon him). That is why the word jeed has been used here ironically, thereby implying that in Hell she would have a rope of palm-fiber round her neck instead of that necklace upon which she prides herself so arrogantly. Another example of this ironical style is found at several places in the Quran in the sentence: Bashshir-hum bi-adhab-in alima “Give them the good news of a painful torment. The words habl-um min-masad have been used for the rope which will be put round her neck, i.e. it will be a rope of the masad kind. Different meanings of this have been given by the lexicographers and commentators. According to some, masad means a tightly twisted rope; others say that masad is the rope made from palm-fiber; still others say that it means the rope made from rush, or camel-skin, or camelhair. Still another view is that it implies a cable made by twisted iron strands together.

Translation and Tafsir of Surah al

Surah al-Masad, meaning “The Palm Fibre”, is the 111th Surah of the Quran. This Surah was revealed as a retort to the arrogance of Abu Lahab, a staunch adversary of righteousness. Blinded by their pride and animosity towards others, Abu Lahab and his wife had gone out-of-the-way to injure innocent people and denounce the Message of Allah. Abu Lahab, as well as his wife, used to take pride in torturing people, denying others their rights, and indulging in treacherous deeds. They would often throw thorns in the path of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and use ill-speech for him and his companions. In fact, so arrogant was Abu Lahab that he claimed that he would buy a place in heaven using his wealth!
