By Hemul Goel: Suraj (he prefers to use a single name), is a 16-year-old boy who lives at the Gurgaon home of Udayan Care--a child rights NGO that runs 13 homes for orphaned and vulnerable children. And why are we talking about him? Because Suraj recently left a mark on the audience and his competitors alike, when he designed one of the most elaborate creations in a competition held during the Handloom Utsav at Lady Irwin College, Delhi--a dress made entirely out of newspaper. It happened like this. Udayan Care was invited to participate in the Handloom Utsav, and one of the volunteers at Udayan Care, who was aware of Suraj's interest in the creative arts, pushed him to enter the competition. A class 10 student of Rose Land Public School, Suraj found time after school to research the internet and then took 2.5 hours to bring the creation to life. "The final product turned out to be a little bit different from the way I had seen it on the internet," he adds. When he won the first prize, amidst contenders who were in college, Suraj probably felt the same exhilaration as the fashion designer he saw when he attended a Fashion Week show earlier this year. A shy adolescent, Suraj spoke to us over the phone and told us he's always been a child of many talents with clay modelling, candle making and handmade cards being but a few things in his creative resume.
