New Delhi: On Swami Vivekananda’s death anniversary (July 4), let’s revisit one of his most memorable and popular speeches. It was the one he gave at the Religion Parliament of Chicago, USA in 1893 and more than a century later, it still stands relevant in today’s time. This was the first World’s Parliament of Religions and took place from 11 to 27 September 1893. But what was the speech about and what about it struck a chord with the audience? Vivekananda introduced Hinduism to his Western audience and spoke about the importance of religious harmony and universal brotherhood. by Asim Chaudhuri Introduction Swami Vivekananda’s first public statement about his views on all the other religions of the world except Hinduism came during his maiden speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago. The sentence in which that view was embedded is: “We believe not only in universal toleration, but we [Hindus] accept all religions as true.” The Chicago Herald quoted that sentence as part of the speech, although their version is slightly different, in that it said, “… we accept all religions to be true.” A detailed account of all the four reports and some comments on them can be found elsewhere. This article addresses the ramifications of Swamiji’s statement, or what was reported by the Herald to be his statement, and of other statements he made elsewhere on the topic of the religions of the world. It will also attempt to resolve the apparent inconsistencies in his statements made at different times and in different circumstances. Swamiji’s other statements on religion The Chicago Herald was undoubtedly the most comprehensive of all the Chicago newspapers in reporting on Swamiji and his multiple speeches at the Parliament. So it is fairly certain that Swamiji uttered those words, or something very close to them. New Delhi: Swami Vivekananda, born Narendra Nath Datta, was one of India’s foremost religious philosophers. Known for his humanistic approach to the Vedas, the sacred texts of Hinduism, Vivekananda provided a window to the West to access the religion. He was a proponent of the Vedanta philosophy in the United States and England, and appeared as a spokesperson for Hinduism at the World’s Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893. The audience was captivated by Vivekananda; one of the accounts described him as “an orator by divine right and undoubtedly the greatest figure at the Parliament”. On his return to India with a small group of Western disciples in 1897, Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission at Belur Math on the banks of the Hooghly (Ganga) near Kolkata. I am not convinced that this is his voice. I will point out one thing. The currently available published version of his speech on 11 Sep. 1893 does not have one line which was found in the original published version of the official bodies of Parliament of Religions as well as the book published by Sri G. Natesan Iyer from Madras during the lifetime of Swami Vivekananda. Since it is well known that Vivekananda spoke extempore there is no question of this line having found its way into the official books if Vivekananda had not spoken it. This audio does not have that line. So to me this is conclusive proof that this audio does not have the voice of Vivekananda. The missing line is : 'I am proud to tell you that I belong to a religion into whose sacred language, the Sanscrit, the word seclusion is untranslatable'.
