The group had been tackling a stretched balance sheet after the outbreak of Covid-19, but recent asset-monetisation efforts and the overall economic recovery have helped get it back on track by significantly reducing the debt burden. Shapoorji Pallonji and Co. Pvt. Ltd (SPCPL), the flagship entity of the group, had applied for a one-time restructuring (OTR) plan under Reserve Bank of India’s resolution framework for Covid-related financial stress. It repaid Rs 12,450 crore to all its lenders to achieve an early OTR exit. Cyrus Mistry had excellent relationships with lenders and investment bankers and he helped steer SP Group through the turbulent period after Covid. He had also pledged a part of Tata Sons shares as security with the banks to raise funds. The move was challenged legally by Tata Sons but the SP Group maintained that it was allowed to pledge shares, although it couldn’t sell them. He also guided the group through marquee monetisation efforts worth Rs 3,750 crore at two of its assets--Sterling Wilson Renewable Energy Ltd and SPCPL is one of India’s oldest engineering and construction companies with diverse interests, including real estate and oil and gas. Its construction business has an order book in excess of Rs 30,000 crore. The SP Group has had a presence in the Dubai real estate market in the last four to five years. Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident in Maharashtra's Palghar on Sunday. Mistry was returning to Mumbai from Ahmedabad in his Mercedes that crashed on a divider. Mistry was aged 54 years. They had visited the Iranshah Atash Behram at Udvada in the morning. Dr Pandole is believed to have been behind the wheel. Jehangir Pandole also died in the accident that took place on a bridge on the Surya river.
