Hits and flops won’t affect Tabu’s career: Shabana Azmi

Did Tabu -- who turns 45 on Friday -- shoot her career in the foot by playing mom to stars like Shahid Kapoor in Haider and Katrina Kaif in Fitoor? Not really, feels her illustrious aunt Shabana Azmi, who says Tabu’s career is impervious to dips and curves. Tabu is a favourite with filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj and Abhishek Kapoor. In a gender-biased film industry like Bollywood, while leading men may continue playing lover boys until they die (and Dev Anand is an embodiment of the patriarchal proclivities that eternally govern the casting rules of Bollywood), a leading lady seemingly loses her sheen once she gets married or hits 40, whichever happens first. Where does Tabu’s career go next? In the past few years, there has been a gradual shift in her positioning from leading lady to ‘character’ actress. In the Salman Khan starrer Jai Ho, she played Salman’s sister. Leading ladies in Bollywood don’t do that unless it’s a film like Josh where Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan played twins, but were anything but sibling-like in their conduct. Tabu, a National Award winning talent, also played mother to Shahid and Katrina in Haider and Fitoor respectively. In Drishyam, her only other release during the last two years, she was cast opposite Rajat Kapoor and not the film’s leading man Ajay Devgn. But these choices will have no bearing on her career, says Shabana. “Hits and flops will make no difference to Tabu’s career. She is a class apart and will always be the firs...

5 essential Smita Patil moments that prove why there’s nobody like her

Among the many nuggets in Maithili Rao’s Smita Patil: A Brief Incandescence, one concerns Girish Karnad in Nishant. This 1975 Shyam Benegal arthouse classic set against a feudal backdrop launched Smita Patil into a film career that nobody imagined would be tragically short and yet, legendary in its scope and influence. Karnad, who is paired opposite Shabana Azmi in Nishant, singles out a scene in which Patil is shown performing a tulsi pooja. According to A Brief Incandescence, that was the moment when he “knew that a star was born.” Rewatching Nishant, the scene barely even registers but Smita Patil, with her raw intensity, smoky presence and natural gift for acting, makes a strong impression nevertheless. There’s another breakout name in this film. A rookie Naseeruddin Shah plays her husband. Besides Shah and Patil who both started out as parallel cinema darlings before cavorting around its more glamorous cousin Bollywood, the cast also includes Amrish Puri, Shabana Azmi, Mohan Agashe, Anant Nag and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. In this repertory of talent that dominated the Hindi art cinema landscape, Patil was but a comet. Yet, the history of one of the most seminal movie movements in India is incomplete without Patil’s short-lived genius. The actor died at the age of 31. She has left behind a powerful legacy that we are still discussing, debating and unpacking more than two decades after her death. Her films made space for feminist interventions, serving as a template for eve...
