The Taj Mahal in India: What to Know Before You Go

The Taj Mahal looms fairytale-like from the banks of the Yamuna River. It's India’s most recognized monument and is also one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The monument dates back to 1632 and is actually a tomb that contains the body of Mumtaz Mahal—the wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. He had it built as an ode to his love for her. It's made out of marble and took 22 years and 20 000 workers to complete. Words cannot do the Taj Mahal justice, its incredible detail simply has to be seen to be appreciated. The bus is a good option if getting a train isn't possible. Comfortable, air-conditioned Volvo buses depart from Anand Vihar terminal in New Delhi every hour during the day. The cost is about 700 rupees per person. The buses go via the Yamuna Expressway and stop at Vaango restaurant for a 30 minute snack and restroom break (the toilets are clean). Opening Hours The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, usually around 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, except Friday (when it's closed for prayer). The Taj Mahal is also open for night viewing every full moon from 8.30 p.m. until 12.30 a.m., plus two days before and two days after the full moon (a total of five days). Night viewing is suspended during the holy month of Ramadan every year. Night Viewing tickets cost 750 rupees for foreigners and 510 rupees for Indians, for half an hour’s admittance. Children aged three to 15 years must pay 500 rupees. These tickets must be purchased betwe...

2023 Taj Mahal with Mausoleum Skip

Make the most out of limited time at the Taj Mahal by avoiding the notoriously long entrance lines, and getting straight inside. This skip-the-line ticket is delivered via email, so there’s no confusion or complications with ticket delivery. To enhance the experience, there’s also an option to upgrade and add on round-trip transfers, or a private guide. Overall, it was a great experience and I’m so glad I had Lalita as a tour guide. She made the process very easy and we were able to skip all the lines buying tickets and entering the Taj Mahal and Red Fort. She was also very knowledgeable about the history of the sites and took so many good pictures of me that I can have as memories. Finally, she was so helpful in negotiating all of the tuk tuk prices to get around and recommending good places to eat. I would definitely recommend her and this company, especially for foreign tourists who may have difficultly navigating the city by themselves. It was a last minute trip for us, and we were so happy to have found this package on the day! Saved us so much trouble in planning a trip in a foreign country. Vivek our guide was outstanding, he knew all the great spots to take photos from and was taking really nice photos for us. Also we were able to hire a nice car back from Agra to Delhi with them which makes the return journey so much more comfortable. I travelled to Agra from Delhi and stayed 1 night so need to do as much as possible in 1 day. This tour was fantastic! I was picked...

Amazing day with Rashid, a historical fort having incredible architecture and ambience vast area of fort is with indian defence for tourists few portion was open. Our guide explained us in detail offcourse some room for improvements but we overlooked. We visited both Taj and agra fort on morning session. Overall recommended. Communication from company is on top of world. Thank you Rashid to make our trip to taj mahal memorable. Read more The booking process was simple and speaking with the “agency” that sells this tour on TripAdvisor was efficient. They were able to answer our questions and communicate easily for the meet up. The agency work or employ multiple guides. In our case, the guide that was assigned to us from this agency was definitely untruthful and dishonest: - He is in touch with different photographers in Taj Mahal and he will negotiate the price against you because he gets a commission. (He will pretend that he does not know them) - He will take you after the tour to some local shops to sell you some stones x10 the price because he gets a commission from these shops.
