How many of us aware writers, social activists and agitators know about – and talk about – the 19th-century radical writer Tarabai Shinde and her 1882 book Stri Purush Tulna (A Comparison Between Women and Men, a booklet on the social situation of women that created quite a stir at that time)? Or, the most important social revolutionary leader of the 19th century, Savitribai Phule (1831 –1897), who was a pioneer in the field of girl-child education and faced plenty of problems but did not give up; and eventually despite all sorts of adverse circumstances, oppositions, prejudices and indifference, became the first woman teacher in India? Even after so many years since Independence, our Indian society and the upper-caste educated class, infected as it is by caste prejudices, is not ready even today to honour Savitribai Phule and the work of social reform that she did and thus include her in the list of prominent Indian social reformers. The place Tarabai Shinde deserved in Indian feminist movement and the feminist philosophy undergirding that movement – like the other Indian and foreign feminist thinkers – was not granted to her. The world will never forget two great personalities of the 19th century. One is Savitribai Phule and the other Tarabai Shinde. Savitribai Phule is well known as India’s first woman teacher, headmistress, sensitive poetess and famous social reformer. Tarabai Shinde was the brilliant writer of ‘Stree Purush Tulna’ (A Comparison Between Women and Men) published in 1882. She used her powerful pen to launch a campaign for the destruction of Hindu religion, its mythological scriptures, religious superstitions and the patriarchal notions promoted through them. Impeccable logic informed her well-crafted arguments. Both these heroines of the 19th century hailed from the Bahujan community and they worked in tandem. Today, both these great personalities are remembered for their logical thinking and dedication to their work. They fearlessly took on the contemporary society with the objective of reforming it. It is heartening to note that over the last couple of years, the grateful Bahujans are trying to tread on the path shown by them. India during the colonial period and after throwing colonial rule away, went through many drastic changes which are overt so far the national movement and the apparent short term goals are concerned, although it is a matter of deep scrutiny whether, parallel to this positively perceived change, the position of woman raised to any good or not. Tarabai Shinde was not your ordinary gal from the 1880s. While most other child brides at the time went about doing their thing, she was busy furiously writing in defiance of the inherent patriarchy she identified in the Hindu scriptures. She is thought of as the first modern feminist writer in India, and it’s a crime that more people do not know about her role in Indian feminism. As with fellow reformer Pandita Ramabai, Tarabai’s father played a crucial role in introducing her to education and multiple languages. Contrary to the custom at the time, Tarabai’s husband moved in with her family instead of vice versa, which meant that she had a greater degree of freedom than was enjoyed by many of her peers in similar situations. Having made an active choice to not have children, she spent a lot of time with contemporary reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule as well. It was with the latter couple that she became a founding member of the “Truth-Finding Community” or Satyashodak Samaj. This was an organization dedicated to the education and upliftment of traditionally discriminated against or ostracized sections of society, particularly women and Shudras (the lowest caste).
