New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam’s Dibrugarh on April 28 where he will inaugurate seven new cancer hospitals and will also lay the foundation stone for seven new cancer hospitals in the state, reported news agency ANI. Ahead of PM Modi’s visit, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reached Dibrugarh on Sunday and took stock of preparations for the programme. Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister shared a photo of the meeting and wrote, “"We are all set to welcome our PM Narendra Modi ji to Assam on April 28. Held a meeting at Manohari Tea Retreat, Dibrugarh, to discuss the plans for the inauguration of Dibrugarh Cancer Centre by the Hon'ble Prime Minister." South Asia's Largest Cancer Care Network Assam Cancer Care Foundation is a joint partnership between the Government of Assam and the Tata Trusts. It was set up in December 2017 to create a first-of-its-kind, three-level cancer grid in the state of Assam. The distributed care model was conceptualised by the Trusts and the Government of Assam to create patient-centric cancer institutions to deliver standardised and affordable care closer to patients’ homes. With a plan to set up 17 cancer hospitals in the state, it is the largest cancer care network in South Asia. Of the 17 hospitals, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated seven centres at Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Tezpur, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Kokrajhar, and Darrang; and laid the foundation stone for seven new hospitals at Nagaon, Goalpara, Nalbari, Golaghat, Tinsukia, Sivasagar and Dhubri on April 28, 2022. Construction work for three centres is in progress at Guwahati, Silchar and Diphu. Medical oncology is a super specialty medical discipline which deals with treatment of cancer with help of medication. DIBRUGARH: Prime Minister It has been developed by Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF), a joint venture of the state government and Tata Trusts. The centre at Dibrugarh is part of 17 medical facilities being developed by ACCF, of which seven will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister during his day-long visit to the state. He unveiled a plaque in front of the centre, in the presence of Assam governor He also virtually inaugurated six other similar facilities in another programme. Those are located in Barpeta, Tezpur, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Kokrajhar and Darrang. PM Modi also laid the foundation of seven hospitals at Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Nalbari, Nagaon and Tinsukia under the project at the same event. A Tata Trusts spokesperson had earlier said that three more such cancer care facilities are in an advanced stage of completion and will be opened later this year. He said the 17 medical facilities, the "largest" network under cancer control model of Tata Trusts, will serve 50,000 people annually not only from Assam but also from neighbouring states.

GUWAHATI: In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a big fire broke out at the cancer centre in Dibrugarh after an electric transformer caught fire. According to reports, the incident happened on June 7 at around 4 am near the hospital's electric transformer. The hospital building houses the highly advanced indoor type dry transformer. There may have been a transformer short circuit. Firemen arrived quickly and put out the fire. So yet, no injuries have been recorded. The Assam Cancer Care Foundation is in charge of overseeing the cancer hospital that is situated on the Assam Medical College Campus. Where are the Centres located? Public system strengthening is one of the key features of the network. The new cancer care facilities will share common resources with existing Government Medical Colleges and District Hospitals. State Cancer Institute, Guwahati and ACCF Cancer Centre, Dibrugarh will be the referral institute providing extensive treatment and diagnostic services along with research. Barpeta, Diphu and Silchar will be level two hospitals annexed to Government Medical Colleges providing comprehensive cancer care services other than research. Tezpur (attached to Tezpur Medical College), Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Darrang, Kokrajhar are being developed as level three hospitals annexed to District Hospitals, providing diagnostics and cancer day care services like chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The model will be supplemented by awareness, screening, and palliative care across levels. How will the Centres help?
