Watch: Ons Jabeur brings Tatjana Maria back onto Centre Court for another round of applause

Ons Jabeur made history with her victory over Tatjana Maria on Thursday by With a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win, Jabeur became the first woman from Africa in the Open Era and first Arab woman ever to reach this stage at a major—ending the 34-year-old mother of two’s fairytale run to her first Grand Slam semifinal in the process. The two friends met at the net after match point for a long hug and a chat, but that wouldn't be enough for Jabeur. After the 27-year-old circled around the net, she quickly grabbed Maria and took her back onto Centre Court to receive another ovation from the crowd. “It was really nice from her that, at the end, she wanted to celebrate with me even though it was her moment,” Maria said in her post-match press conference. “For her, it's the first time to be in a Grand Slam final. Yeah, I think it was her moment, but she wanted to celebrate it with me, what makes it also really special. “She really deserves it. I'm really happy for her, too.” Jabeur is famous on tour for her upbeat personality and friendly nature—her nickname in Tunisia, and now around the world, is “The Minister of Kindness”—so she’s no stranger to facing a friend across the net. “For me, after all, it's just a tennis match. We didn't go to war or anything,” Jabeur told press afterward. “It was amazing, great. I have a lot of respect for her. If she won today, she would have deserved it 100 percent. “That's what I love about tennis: it's just a tennis match, then you move on and get to the next...

Maria, mother of two, brings family business to Wimbledon run

2022 Wimbledon June 30, 2022 Maria, mother of two, brings family business to Wimbledon run Tatjana Maria, the first mother of two to reach the third round of Wimbledon this century, discusses her feats, life on the road with two daughters and why Serena Williams is the perfect role model. By Alex Macpherson It might not have fully sunk in, but 34-year-old Tatjana Maria is quietly putting together a few remarkable accomplishments in 2022. Her 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 upset of No.26 seed Sorana Cirstea this week, from a double-break down in the third set, meant that she became the first mother of two to reach the third round of Wimbledon this century. It follows her second Hologic WTA Tour title in Bogota back in April. "Some people like to do bungee-jumping," Maria says. "I like to come back to tennis after having kids, I guess." The German's first daughter, Charlotte, was born in December of 2013. She returned four months later and had her career-best results, cracking the Top 50 in 2017 and winning her first title, in Mallorca the following year. Maria's second daughter, Cecilia, was born in April of 2021. It was always clear, she says, that she would resume her tennis career, which she did just three months later. She has already returned to the edge of the Top 100 at No.103. "I'm kind of proud of myself to reach this point again," Maria says. "When you start coming back after a child, you never know how it will go. I have to say, I have been really lucky with my body. I am not rea...
