Why is Vijay called Thalapathy?

By Janani K: Vijay is one of the leading stars in Kollywood and enjoys a great fan following among people of different age groups. His film journey screams of hard work and is inspiring, to say the least. Today, his market is so huge that films get made just for him. After Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, Vijay is the next big thing in Kollywood. Tracing the history of Tamil cinema, leading stars in Kollywood are seen as demigods. Tamil cine buffs are also used to referring to stars with their own epithets, as it is believed it brings the stars closer to the people. It all started with the legendary actor-politician MG Ramachandran (MGR) who started being known as Makkal Thilagam. WHEN MGR BECAME MAKKAL THILAGAM MGR is one actor who shares a great relationship with the public even after reaching the peak of stardom. His connect with the people made him the Makkal Thilagam of people. Soon after, every actor from Sivaji Ganesan to Ajith and Vijay, have been given epithets either by fans of filmmakers. WHEN DID VIJAY BECOME ILAYATHALAPATHY? Vijay started his career as a child artiste in a film titled Vetri, which was released in 1984. After doing a handful of films as a child actor, he worked in Rajinikanth’s Naan Sigappu Manithan. It was in 1992 that Vijay turned hero with a film titled Naalaiya Theerpu. In his initial days, Vijay worked closely with his father, SA Chandrasekhar, who is also a filmmaker. It took a while for Vijay to taste success as a hero. Two years after his ...

‘Thalapathy’ Vijay, the last superstar of Tamil box office

‘Thalapathy’ Vijay, who is celebrating his Vijay, however, is unperturbed. The actor, who is perhaps the last OG of Tamil box office, still commands a huge market that responds to all kinds of movies he does. His stardom has reached a point, where even his most unimaginative, unoriginal and unamusing movie could bring in global box office receipts of upwards of Rs 200 crore. Case in point, his last film Beast. Written and directed by Nelson, the movie was panned by critics and it even received bad word of mouth. But, that didn’t stop it from churning profits for its financiers. Only a real OG can pull off such a feat amid an unresolved pandemic, onslaught of streaming services and skyrocketing inflation. (Photo: Janardhan Koushik/Indian Express) Vijay’s superstardom also comes with certain unpleasant trappings that he seemingly can’t outmanoeuvre. His movies are expected to follow a template: a set of dance numbers and fight sequences amid a handful of quotable punchlines. Filmmakers have to bob and weave an interesting story around these narrative obligations. Vijay’s stardom disallows him from fitting into the world of an engrossing story. Instead, filmmakers have to write a story around the onscreen image of Vijay. And that limits the options when it comes to the kind of movies that Vijay’s market can accommodate. Anything maverick, new, unsentimental or unconventional is unlikely to even make it to h...

Tamil Superstar 'Thalapathy' Vijay To Act In Venkat Prabhu's Next Movie

In a social media post on Sunday, Vijay said the film produced by Kalpathi S. Aghoram's AGS Entertainment will have all the ingredients of a movie expected from a young super star of Kollywood. This is the second movie produced by AGS Entertainment after "Bigil". The director, Venkat Prabhu, has a distinct style of filmmaking and the movie with Vijay could be a captivating experience for the audience. This, incidentally, will be the 68th movie of Vijay, whose popularity is ranked only next to the South Indian mega star Rajanikanth. His last movie, "Varisu", became Vijay's first to enter the Rs 300-crore club, making it his all-time big hit. The Venkat Prabhu movie's music is by Yuvan Shankar Raja, whose experiments were said to have opened the 'era of remixes' for Kollywood. This is the second 'Thalapthy' Vijay movie where Yuvan Shankar Raja will give the music after "Pudhiya Geethai" in 2003. Vijay will next be seen in "Leo" directed by ace Tamil director Lokesh Kanagaraj. The movie was shot in Kashmir and features Trisha and Sanjay Dutt in lead roles. The movie is set for an October 19, 2023, release. 'Thalapathy' Vijay will also be seen in a cameo in the Shah Rukh-Nayanthara-starrer "Jawan". Interestingly Venkat Prabhu becomes one of the select few in Tamil industry to have made films with both Vijay and his on-screen rival in the popularity sweepstakes, Ajith. Venkat Prabhu has made super hit movies such as "Mankatha", "Chennai 28", and "Maanadu". His latest movie, the...
