Science reveals Marvel plot hole: Thanos couldn't have snapped with a glove : NPR

Scene from Avengers: Infinity War where Thanos snaps while wearing the infinity gauntlet. Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War If you've ever seen the Avengers: Infinity War, you probably recall the scene where antagonist Thanos has all the Infinity Stones in his metal glove, and with a snap of his fingers he wipes out half of the population of the universe. That scene sparked some off-camera drama at the Georgia Institute of Technology where "I was like, no way can that Thanos snap with that Infinity Gauntlet," Bhamla says. "I bet, like, the softness of our skin has something to do with it." Bhamla co-authored The Royal Society. He says the sound of snapping is fairly easy to explain. "If I snap my fingers, the sound is originating when your finger actually slams into the fleshy part of your thumb or your hand," he says. But Bhamla and his team wanted to know more about the physics involved, so they put sensors on their fingers and then snapped with rubber gloves on, with lotion on and with metal thimbles on their fingertips. As they tested the different variables, they filmed high-speed video. After analyzing the footage, the scientists determined that skin to skin friction along with the compressibility of our fingers is key to generating the motion. Which means it won't work in a metal glove. Sorry, Thanos. They also found that the whimsical ability of snapping is really, really fast. "The angular accelerations are about 1.6 million degrees per second squared," Bhaml...

In Doctor Strange, we are made aware of the different universes and especially the one one in which Dormammu resides, which is the Dark Dimension. Were beings in other dimensions also affected by the Snap Thanos did in Avengers: Infinity War? Were beings like Dormammu also affected by the Snap or were they more than just a creature and the Snap did not have any effect on him? My knowledge says Thanos himself says the following in Avengers: Endgame: The universe required correction. After that, the stones served no purpose beyond temptation. Which confuses me, are other dimensions also affected? Yes Exhibit A: The Quantum Realm is considered a separate dimension, as part of the Multiverse in the MCU. • • The quantum realm is first introduced in the MCU in the Ant-Man movie. It is explained by Dr. Pym that the quantum realm is a distinct reality, although he does not state explicitly that it is a different dimension. • Dr. Hank Pym: It means that you would enter a quantum realm. • Scott Lang: What does that mean? • Dr. Hank Pym: It means that you would enter a reality where all concepts of time and space become irrelevant as you shrink for all eternity. Everything that you know, and love, gone forever. In the Doctor Strange movie the Quantum realm is shown again when the Ancient One first tells Strange of other dimensions. This image here is obviously a nod to Ant-Man and the Quantum Realm, acknowledging that as one of the mysterious realms of existence. -Scott Derrickson, d...

Today in Marvel History: The Thanos Snap

He snapped. On May 21, 1991, the Mad Titan upended existence with a single click of his fingers, killing 50% of life, and leaving the Super Heroes of the Marvel universe with the greatest fight in history ahead of them. Led by the resurrected Adam Warlock and aided by primal cosmic forces, Earth's protectors entered cosmic warfare in a six-issue event written by Jim Starlin and featuring the art of George Perez and Ron Lim. And 28 years later, the reverberations of this one action are still echoing across the world!

Marvel Confirms Thanos' Snap Wiped Out Half of All Plant Life Too

"Thanos snapped away half of all life, including animals," Feige tweeted on the official Avengers account. "And probably even trees. We had some shots of Central Park we were going to use to lead Cap's grief counseling scene, and we talked about what it'd look like with 50% less trees." Thanos snapped away half of all life, including animals. And probably even trees. We had some shots of Central Park we were going to use to lead Cap's grief counseling scene, and we talked about what it'd look like with 50% less trees. - Kevin After Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters last summer, directors Anthony and Joe Russo spoke with ComicBook.com about The Snap and its impact on society. The latter revealed why they chose to show showing the heroes dust away rather than ending the film by cutting to black. "It was always a plan to show beyond that because when we made the decision to have the snaps themselves, that's a plot trick to cut to black after an incident like that happens," Russo said. "And it doesn't give you any emotional resonance or catharsis. What he said thinking about it realistically; the true heartbreak doesn't lie in the fact that he snapped his fingers, it lies in the fact that people have to watch loved ones, and we have to watch characters that we care about die. And that's where the real heartbreak lies for the characters who live in the Universe and for those of us watching the movie."
