What is the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework for Azure? Your Guide to CAF

This article was originally posted on the Emergent Software blog . Deciding to invest in cloud adoption is easy — most businesses these days understand the importance of the cloud. But after that first decision comes a lot of harder ones. How much should you budget for cloud resources? What should be migrated to the cloud and how? Who will be responsible for each step of your cloud transformation and what skills do they need? How will you secure your cloud environment? To help you navigate all the complexities of cloud adoption, Microsoft has laid out best practices, documentation, and tools to guide and assist you throughout your entire cloud journey. This is the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) for Azure. CAF is a guide designed to assist in creating and implementing a cloud strategy on the Azure cloud. While the framework is an invaluable resource for your cloud strategy, it’s also a lot of information to take in at once. In this article, we’ve provided a summary of what you’ll find in each section of CAF and how to use it. What is the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework for Azure? The Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework provides guidance for creating and implementing a cloud strategy. It includes documents and tools for each phase of cloud adoption and can be useful to IT professionals, business leaders, and anyone else involved in cloud decision-making. CAF isn’t exclusively for organizations that are just getting started with cloud migration — it can be used by...

Landing zone sandbox environments

In this article A sandbox is an isolated environment where you can test and experiment without affecting other environments, like production, development, or user acceptance testing (UAT) environments. Conduct proof of concepts (POCs) with Azure resources in a controlled environment. Each sandbox has its own Azure subscription, and Azure policies control the subscription. The policies are applied at the sandbox management group level, and the management group inherits policies from the hierarchy above it. Depending on its purpose, an individual or a team can use a sandbox. Tip For information about the default Azure landing zones policy assignments, see Sandbox environments are the best place for hands-on Azure learning. Some common use cases include: • A developer needs a controlled Azure environment to quickly test application design patterns. • A cloud architect needs a sandbox environment to evaluate Azure resources or conduct POCs for an Azure service or resource before formally approving them for their organization. • A cloud engineer needs a sandbox environment to better understand what happens when a setting is changed on an Azure resource. • A platform engineer wants to build and test out a new Azure policy and see how it behaves per the • A developer wants to experiment with Azure services or resources while building an application. Sandbox architecture The following image shows the management group and subscription layout. Place the sandbox subscription in the s...

Review Pulling together Azure’s Well-Architected Framework and Cloud Adoption Framework In addition to the Well-Architected Framework, this blog series has referenced the Similar to the Well-Architected Framework, the • • • • Adopt ( • • • So how do these two frameworks work together? In short, Azure’s Well-Architected Framework targets a specific workload, and the Cloud Adoption Framework picks them up from the point of migration to the cloud. Organizations new to cloud will begin with Azure’s Cloud Adoption Framework. Strategy, planning, and governance are key to a successful cloud adoption and operations. If you’ve already migrated or built an app for cloud, check out the How cloud adoption fits in your sustainability plan Both the Cloud Adoption Framework and Well-Architected Framework provide guidance on cost optimization with a focus on moving from on-premises physical servers into the cloud’s virtualized hardware. Virtualization not only reduces costs, but reduces environmental impact through higher computing density. This tight density reduces server footprint and has an impact on Azure’s capacity management and planning. In writing this series, With the climate crisis looming ever closer, both private and public companies are focused on doing their part across every business unit. Cloud Adoption Security

What is a Cloud Adoption Security Review? The Cloud Adoption Security Review (CASR) is aimed to self-assess an Security is an ongoing journey of incremental progress and maturity, and not a static destination. The Cloud Adoption Framework provides security guidance for this journey by providing clarity to the processes and best practices. This guidance is based on real world experiences of our customers, of Microsoft's own security journey and lessons learned, and the work with other organizations like NIST ( National Institute of Standards and Technology)or CIS ( Center for Internet Security). The outcome is manifested in the Cloud Adoption Framework Secure Methodologywhichprovides a vision of the complete end state of your security journey and follows theZero Trust principle ( assume breach, verify explicitly, use least privilege access). This assessment gives you the opportunity to self-assess your security journey of your cloud adoption against this secure methodology. What are the areas we are addressing with this assessment? This assessment targets the CAF secure methodology. This methodology provides guidance on the integration of security with business processes (also called business alignment) and security disciplines. The following domain areas are covered in the Cloud Adoption Security Review: • Business Alignment • • • • Security Disciplines • • • • • When should you do a Cloud Adoption Security Review? Before cloud adoption can begin you need to have Azure lan...
