IPL 2023: Mumbai Indians open to resting captain Rohit Sharma if needed in World Cup year

By India Today Sports Desk: Mumbai Indians' newly-appointed head coach Mark Boucher said on Wednesday, March 29 that 5-time champions will be open to the idea of resting Rohit Sharma for "one or two games" in the IPL 2023 season if that would make him fresher and hungrier for more. The former South Africa wicketkeeper said MI will play it according to situations as they embark on a new season of high-octane cricket. When asked if he would be willing to rest for a couple of games, Rohit Sharma passed the question to Mark Boucher, who takes over as Mumbai Indians coach after having had a successful stint with the South African national team. "In terms of resting Rohit, he is the captain. Hopefully, he gets into good form and hopefully, he doesn’t want to rest. But, yeah, we will react to whatever the situation is. If I can get the best out of him as a captain and a player if he rests one or two games, then I will do that," Boucher said as him and Rohit met the press in Mumbai on Wednesday. Rohit Sharma also said the team will definitely be open to resting some of their star players, especially the bowlers, if they need a break at any point in the season. Mumbai Indians will be without Jasprit Bumrah, who has been ruled out due to recurrence of his back injury. The pacer is racing against time to be fit for the ODI World Cup later this year in India. WE WILL GIVE REST: ROHIT Rohit himself has had injury concerns in the past and the Mumbai batter, who will lead India at the Wo...

Ben Stokes ready to play IPL next year as England hope for ODI ‘unretirement’

Ben Stokes is set to put his name forward for next year’s Indian Premier League amid a hope from England that he reverses his retirement from ODI cricket and defends the 50-over World Cup. The 31-year-old all-rounder trimmed his focus to Test captaincy and Twenty20 cricket during the summer citing an unsustainable schedule but, after he powered England to double-world champion status with victory over Pakistan in Sunday’s final, the head coach, Matthew Mott, has not given up on a rethink. Read more “He’s a three-dimensional player and he has so much to offer,” Mott said. “In this team he was the glue – I think we have a lot of guys who can do extraordinary things but he was the player you knew that if he was in you’d win the game. “When he spoke to me about his ODI retirement one of the first things I said was that I’d back any decision he made, but I said to him he didn’t necessarily have to retire, he could just not play 50-overs for a while. And I said: ‘You could always unretire.’ “That’s his decision. It’s going to be a World Cup year and we don’t play much T20 cricket for a while, but it will be up to him. The more we can get him is great. He’s doing an amazing job with the Test captaincy but he is a very big cog in the wheel when he comes back to white-ball.” Stokes may well stick to his current course and is understood to be entering the IPL auction in Bangalore on 23 December. He was released from a £1.3m contract at Rajasthan Royals in 2021 and, after that summer...

IPL going the football way – coaches hold the power to hand

Nitish Rana, Shikhar Dhawan, Sanju Samson and KL Rahul are not names that readily come to mind when one is looking for cerebral captains or leaders of men. But all four have been nominated ‘captains’ for their respective IPL franchises. Even Suryakumar Yadav, with little captaincy experience, may have to step in as Mumbai Indians captain if Rohit Sharma decides to sit out a few matches owing to fitness concerns. Last year, Ashish Nehra was seen slumped on the staircase leading up to the dressing room with a paper in hand. He would later term it as a “menu for the night” but the menu seemingly included who should bowl when. Or so the perception went. Often, he would be seen animatedly gesticulating from the dugout to Hardik Pandya, Gujarat Titans captain, which bowler should bowl the particular over. ‘Give one more over to Rashid Khan’, ‘bring a particular fast bowler now’. Hardik has not only not minded it but has actively sought and taken such advice. “Hardik has no ego in that sense. Advertisements are one thing, the real Hardik is another. He has always been a good listener, has always followed good advice, he might do his thing in the end but always listens first to the people he trusts. And he trusts Nehra a lot. He is not a fool to say ‘I know everything, I will do it my way or what will people think?’ He knows and values good suggestions.” Hardik’s childhood coach Jitendra Singh had told this newspaper. T20 is pushing cricket into a fascinating space now. Daniel Vet...
