'Thiruchitrambalam' review: Mother of all 'formula' films with boring writing

August 18, 2022 | 04:47 pm 3 min read 'Thiruchitrambalam' hit the theaters on Thursday (August 18). You already know what will happen when you go to watch a masala film—the hero and heroine win the day and live happily ever after. Thiruchitrambalam, directed by Mithran Jawahar, is the synonym of formula films in the dictionary of Tamil cinema. In fact, we've been seeing the same story in Tamil cinema since the dawn of time. We review. What is 'Thiruchitrambalam' all about? You have Pazham/Thiruchitrambalam (Dhanush), a laid-back chap with a traumatizing past that he can't let go of. His father ( Polladhavan types). You have Pazham's BFF Shobhana ( What happens between Pazham and Shobhana is the whole story. Predictability is a major negative By predictability, I don't mean just the proceedings. A gentleman sitting next to me kept on uttering what the next dialog would be, and he was right— every single time! For example, take Pazham and Shobana's relationship: from the very beginning, one would be able to easily guess how it ends. It shouldn't have been the case, given the whole story revolves around their relationship! Poor characterization topples the story further The poorly written characters spoil the whole film's mood. For instance, when Pazham and his father patch up, you want to feel something deeper. Because here is a guy who didn't talk to his father for 10 years. One would expect it to be mini-catharsis, to say the least. But it sadly didn't work out. Perhaps, ...

Nithya Menen: 'When I look at a Shobana or Kanchana, that's completely not me'

₹50 crore in its opening weekend worldwide. Nithya’s character of Shobana, who plays Also read: Nithya Menen was recently seen in Thiruchitrambalam. Nithya says it’s not always the character alone that gets her excited to sign a project. “When I hear something, it needs to be sensible, needs to be real, needs to be an actual film. It's very simple. It needs to be a real story that wants to be told,” she said, adding, there are two ways to package a film. “When it comes to commercial cinema, you pick and choose what you want and package it in a way so that you can sell it to the audience. That is not something that excites me. I choose films that make a little more sense with a genuine story that wants to be told.” She further explains that she doesn’t follow a process when it comes to picking a role. “From a creative perspective, an artist will never over analyse anything. You just go with your feeling and instinct. If I look at an Ok Kanmani, I say that's so me and I could play it. But when I look at a Shobana or Kanchana, that's completely not me and I tell myself how challenging it'd be to play these roles. I don’t really plan it out. Acting is not a profession for me. I see acting as an extension of who I’m.” Prod her about what got her excited about Thiruchitrambalam, and if it’s the character of a girl bestie to a mainstream hero, she said, “Not really. I saw the whole premise of the film. I knew exactly where Dhanush was coming from when he called me personally and ...

Thiruchitrambalam Movie Review: Dhanush, Nithya Menen shine in a heartwarming drama

Thiruchitrambalam Movie Synopsis: A guy-next-door tries to find romance in his life while also dealing with problems in his broken family. How long will it be before he realises what he is looking for is right next to him? Thiruchitrambalam Movie Review: With Thiruchitrambalam, Mithran Jawahar delivers a sweet-natured drama in which he plays with familiar tropes, but presents them with just the right amount of freshness to keep us invested and eventually leave the theatre with a smile. In Dhanush and Nithya Menen, the director has two actors who effortlessly make their characters endearing, which elevates the film's appeal and makes it charming. The story revolves around Thiruchitrambalam (Dhanush) aka Pazham, a food delivery guy, and his relationships. There is his grandfather Thiruchitrambalam (Bharathirajaa), who is the father figure in his life, given that his father Neelankandan (Prakash Raj), a cop, and he are barely on speaking terms, due to a tragedy from their past. There is Anusha (Raashi Khanna), his childhood crush, who walks into his life after years and makes his heart flutter. And then, there is Shobana (Nithya Menen), his neighbour and childhood friend, who is his one source of comfort. As Pazham says, "Simple aana life. Perusa drama edhuvum illa." The equations that these characters have with each other aren't exactly new. We have the grandfather as the buddy trope in the relationship between the two Pazhams; the rough-and-tough father with a soft side in ...
