By an interim order passed on March 18, 2014, the court restrained Sampath Kumar from making any statement against Dhoni. However, despite the order, Kumar allegedly filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court containing disparaging remarks against the judiciary and the senior counsel representing the State in the cases against him. In his submission, Kumar claimed that "people were trying to gag his voice through such a suit". Sampath Kumar, an IPS officer, had alleged that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain of CSK, was involved in the betting and match-fixing scandal. Following Kumar's 'derogatory' remarks, Dhoni filed a defamation suit against Kumar and a private TV network, seeking damages of ₹100 crore. “The sole agenda of the defendants were somehow to malign and destroy my reputation in the eyes of the millions of my fans and cricket lovers all over the world,” he said, requesting a direction to the defendants to pay Rs 100 crore towards damages. In March 2014, the court issued an interim order restraining Kumar from making any statements against Dhoni. However, Kumar allegedly filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court containing disparaging remarks against the judiciary and the senior counsel representing the state in the cases against him. In December 2021, the Madras High Court took up the matter and issued a notice to Kumar. The court has asked Kumar to respond to Dhoni's allegations by February 2023.
