Will courts interfere in how to conduct rituals?: SC on plea alleging irregularities at Tirupati Balaji temple

Image Source : PTI Can't interfere in how to conduct 'puja', break a coconut: SC on plea in connection with Tirupati Balaji temple The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the constitutional court can't interfere in the day-to-day affairs of the temple, and declined to issue any order on a petition alleging irregularities in certain rituals of Tirupati Balaji temple. A bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana said constitutional courts can't spell out how rituals ('puja' in a temple) should be performed, how coconut should be broken, how a garland should be put on a deity, etc. The bench, also comprising Justices AS Bopanna and Hima Kohli said these issues cannot be decided in a writ petition. Sarvari Daadaa, petitioner-in-person, submitted that it is a public temple. The bench said: "How will courts interfere in this...how to conduct rituals?" The bench noted that the relief sought by the petitioner is in the nature of interfering in day-to-day affairs of the temple. It further added that this cannot be looked into by a constitutional court and any deviation from tradition is a question of fact, which the trial court can look into by appreciating the evidence. The top court asked the temple administration to respond to the petitioner's grievances, and if there is still a grievance on specified aspects, the petitioner can approach the appropriate forum. Dadda, a devotee of Lord Venkateshwara Swamy alleged irregularities in the conduct of 'sevas' and rituals at the Tirupati Temple....

Alka Verma- Published On: September 29, 2021 at 17:47 IST On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of India granted a one-week time to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) for clarifying the irregularities at the Tirupati Balaji Temple. The Court also asked the TTD to give response to a grievance made by a devotee of Lord Venkateshwara Swamy. In his grievance, the devotee alleged that there are various irregularities in conduct of ‘sevas’ and rituals at the Tirupati Temple. The Court also asked the TTD to clarify about the irregularities to the Court as well. A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli gave the orders while it was dealing with Special Leave Petition which challenged an Order of Andhra Pradesh High Court. During the hearing, the Top Court emphasised on the point that it can’t intervene in the matter of number of people performing pooja and how the pooja is being conducted. However, after observing that a reference representation has been provided by the Petitioner, the Court ordered the Counsel who was appearing for Tirumala Devasthanam to find out what happened and tell the Court about the same. The Court even asked the petitioner, Srivari Dadda to have patience. “If you are a Balaji devotee then you must be patient. Every day you cannot threaten registry to list the petition. This is not done. We are also devotees of Balaji,” stated the Court. It should be noted here that earlier the Andhra Pradesh High Cour...

Tirupati Balaji a Jain Tirthankar – The Art of Living Jainism

Did you know that the revered South Indian temple of so called Lord Venkateshwara was the Jain Temple which was converted to an Hindu Temple during the Bhakti movement during the 10th Century A.D. by one of the most famous saints of Hinduism Adi Shankaracharya. The temple once was an temple of the 22nd Tirthankara Lord Neminath. The story behind this conversion is a very interesting one. When Adi Shankaracharya visited the temple during his mission of converting Jain temples to Hindu temples he was stopped by Jain monks and some laymen stopped him. Then he threatened them by saying that he is going to demolish the Bahubali Swami Idol at Shri Gomateshwara in Sharavanabelagola near Banglore.Bahubali being an important figure and the idol being unique itself the peaceful Jain Community left that place. Thefollowing changes were made after it was captured: 1. The head of a Tirthankara has a different type of covering to hide which a crown was made above the head. 2. The back hands being in pran mudra a space was made or may be a shankh and a wheel was falsely added to it. 3. Two more hands and a tilak to cover the eyes were falsely added to change the appearance. 4. The shikharam of the temple was changed purpose fully to Hindu style to delete the proofs which is seen as different from other Hindu temples. The Bhramanic society at this time was against Jainism because the Jains were against the rituals practised by this society and against the caste system. Hope thisinformatio...

Not feasible for court to rule on Tirupati temple sevas: Supreme Court

The appellant said special pujas, sevas and darshans are not being practiced according to the Agama Shastra at the Tirupati temple. File photo “A constitutional court cannot look into the day-to-day affairs of a temple,” the Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday in case filed by a devotee alleging ‘wrongful and irregular’ procedure at the Sri Venkateswara temple in Tirupati. “Can we interfere in the rituals of a temple? How to break a coconut or how to do aarti?” it asked. Yet, the temple administration owes a proper response to devotee Srivari Dadaa, the appellant in the case, and should respond within eight weeks, said an SC bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli. “It is your duty to clarify it. You don’t have a free pass,” the bench told the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which runs the temple. If the appellant still had a grievance, he could approach an appropriate forum, rather than a constitutional court, it added. Also read: The SC was hearing an appeal that challenged an Andhra Pradesh High Court order in the case. The High Court, in January, had rejected the devotee’s plea that alleged rituals at the hill temple were not followed correctly. What the devotee objected to In his filing, Dadaa, stated to be a ‘temple researcher’, had said special pujas, sevas and darshans are not being practiced according to the Agama Shastra at Tirupati. He particularly objected to how the Vahana Seva was being performed during the Brahmotsavam festiva...

Looking back at 2020’s impact on Tirupati

For the first time in a century, temples in Tirupati had to remain closed for months together in view of the COVID-19 situation and the subsequent lockdown triggered by it. It was exactly 129 years ago that Sri Venkateswara temple at Tirumala was kept closed only for three days for reasons unknown. The year 2020 witnessed the second such closure, that too for nearly three months, and the first ever since the formation of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in the 1930s. Though the lockdown and the restriction on public movement was prevalent across the country, the standstill at Tirumala and the inactivity in Tirupati downhill was unprecedented and beyond anybody’s imagination. When the lockdown was partially lifted and restrictions on inter-State vehicular movement eased, the first thing that many Hindu devotees contemplated was undertaking the ‘long-delayed’ pilgrimage to the abode of Lord Venkateswara. “When we look back, the pilgrim footfall tumbled from 2.75 crore to a mere 80 lakh devotees this year,” TTD Executive Officer K.S. Jawahar Reddy told The Hindu . In an informal chat, Mr. Jawahar Reddy said that the average number of visitors, usually pegged at 20-25 lakh per month, slid to 4.5 lakh to 8 lakh this year. “Naturally, the Hundi collections took a dip from ₹1,281 crore to ₹500 crore so far this financial year,” he said. Rising to the occasion Rising to the occasion, the TTD management got down to providing meals to the stranded pilgrims during the entire ...
