Health infrastructure in a shambles as Covid scare looms large on Amritsar village

By Kamaljit Kaur Sandhu: As the Covid wave grips India, the shadow of a pandemic looms large over the remote villages of Amritsar, which share border with Pakistan. With images from Delhi emerging on social media, the villages which have largely escaped the wrath of Covid-19, see a slow but steady rise in cases. Vaccine hesitancy, coupled with failing health infrastructure, has made the situation complicated. India Today TV visited Amritsar’s Modhe village, which is barely a few kilometres from the Attari Wagah border, a popular tourist spot where thousands would throng. The person was put on ventilators and was given medicines. Later, doctors charged Rs 600 for PPE kits and said the bill for Covid treatment was Rs 8 to Rs 9 lakh. A milk seller, too, stated about the sad health infrastructure of the state. “If you cough or sneeze, the people are taken away with no care, no oxygen, and eventually these patients die of negligence.” Several of them had gone to Singhu but were not affected by Covid in Delhi. A villager carries on her daily activity without a mask. Buta Singh of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee said: “Corona is not as dangerous as the government. All this is propaganda.” There is major confusion and contradiction among the villagers. Some believe the...
