New Delhi: India reported The number of deaths climbed to 4,82,551 with 534 more fatalities, the data showed. A total of 2,135 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected across 23 states and Union Territories so far, out of which 828 have recovered or migrated, according to the Union health ministry's data updated on Wednesday. Several states have announced restrictions like night curfew as Covid cases continue to rise. While the variant is spreading like wildfire around the world, it appears to be far less severe than initially feared and has raised hopes that the pandemic could be overcome and life return to more normality, the WHO has said. But WHO senior emergencies officer Catherine Smallwood sounded an ominous note of caution, telling news agency AFP that the soaring infection rates could have the opposite effect. India records 5,880 new Covid cases in 24 hours, positivity rate 6.91%

By Sneha Mordani: India recorded 5,880 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the active caseload to 35,199, according to health ministry data on Monday. The daily positivity rate stands at 6.91 per cent while the weekly positivity rate is at 3.67 per cent. The Indian Medical Association said that the reasons behind the recent Covid surge in our country may be because of the relaxation of Covid-19 appropriate behaviour, low testing rate and the emergence of a new variant of Covid. A total of 44,196,318 people have recovered with the recovery rate rising to 98.74 per cent. Meanwhile, 14 deaths were registered, taking the death toll to 53,09,79. A total of 205 doses of vaccine were administered in the last 24 hours. A total of 220,66,23,527 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far under the Nationwide Vaccination Drive. In view of rising Covid-19 cases in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has ordered reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and antigen tests for patients in emergency wards, along with the ones in the outpatient department. The state has recorded 319 fresh cases on Sunday and with this, the active number of Covid-19 cases in Uttar Pradesh stood at 1,192.
