The The city had last experienced heatwave conditions in 2016 when the mercury had crossed 40°C on three consecutive days from April 11, during which the mercury had climbed up to 41.3°C. While the chances of a repeat were now unlikely in Kolkata, heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in other districts of south Bengal — except South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore — till Tuesday. Dum Dum recorded a maximum of 40.9°C on Monday. Bankura, Purulia, East and West Burdwan, West Midnapore, Jhargram and Birbhum were likely to experience heatwave till April 28. Bankura recorded 43.9°C while Panagarh recorded 43.1°C and Asansol clocked 42.7°C on Monday. The gruelling conditions have prompted the RMC to issue an advisory for residents of south Bengal. It has asked people to avoid prolonged heat exposure, advised them to wear light coloured, loose cotton clothes, cover heads, use umbrellas and to drink sufficient water. Workers have been cautioned to avoid direct sunlight and those venturing out have been warned against heat strokes. “Recognize the signs of heat stroke, heat rash or heat cramps such as weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, sweating and seizures,” it said. “Moisture incursion has not been adequate so far, which has prevented the formation of rain-triggering clouds despite the intense heat. Weather forecasters expect the presence of cyclonic circulation over parts of south Bengal to trigger thunderstorm activities which will help lower the temperatures in Kolkata. In fact, the system is already pushing up cloud formation and causing intermittent spells of rain in some south Bengal districts, including East and West Midnapore, Jhargram and Purulia.
