Hybrids vs diesels vs electric cars: Total cost of ownership compared

BHPian pqr recently shared this with other enthusiasts. HEV vs. Diesel vs. BEV: Total cost of ownership study: The mid-size SUV segment in India now has three low-running-cost vehicle options available, based on different technologies: conventional diesel engine (ICE) from Hyundai-KIA; strong hybrid (HEV) from Toyota-Maruti; and pure electric (BEV) from MG. There are numerous use cases, and each product and technology comes with its own set of advantages and limitations. So which one to choose? Toyota has been claiming that HEV technology is the right transitionary path to BEV adoption, and to walk the talk, Toyota brought strong hybrid technology to the masses in India in the form of the Toyota Hyryder, based on its non-identical twin, the Maruti Grand Vitara. MG has also launched the ZS EV facelift this year with an updated battery pack. The Hyundai Creta is due for a facelift early next year. Safety: The European MG ZS EV received a five-star rating in the 2019 Euro NCAP crash test. ZS EV are imported as CKD units and are assembled at MG India’s plant in Halol, Gujarat. The Hyundai Creta only received a three-star rating in the GNACP frontal offset crash test (old protocol). The Toyota Hyryder is yet to be tested. Dimensions: Exterior dimensions can be deceptive, because actual usable in-cabin and boot space depends on overall packaging done by designers and engineers, and potential buyers need to examine cars in person and make a final decision based on family needs. Upcoming Toyota Hyryder Hybrid SUV Teased Ahead Of The Launch

A while ago a leaked document revealed that the upcoming Toyota Hyryder SUV features not one but two hybrid powertrains options. This shocked many and the leaked documents reveal that the upcoming SUV can be optioned with either of these powertrain units. While both these engines are 1.5-litre petrol engines, one of the powertrains is a mild hybrid unit, whereas the other powertrain is a strong hybrid engine. According to the specifications revealed by the leaked documents, the 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine puts out a respectable 101.6bhp of peak power. Also, this engine can be specified with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the 1.5-litre strong hybrid unit produces a bit more peak power at 114.5bhp and comes exclusively mated to an eCVT gearbox. In addition to that, the 1.5-litre strong hybrid engine also comes with an advanced self-charging capability in order to propel the SUV in EV mode for short distances. In terms of features, the upcoming Toyota Hyryder hybrid SUV is expected to come equipped with features such as wireless charging, air purifier, a large 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, 360-degree surround-view camera, climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, connected car tech, electric sunroof and much more. Thoughts About Toyota Hyryder SUV Though both brands co-developed the hybrid SUV, Toyota's version of the hybrid SUV will be launched slightly earlier than Maruti Suzuki's version as exp...

Toyota Hyryder strong hybrid: A City & Fortuner owner's perspective

BHPian tjsi recently shared this with other enthusiasts. Introduction I wanted a kind of a car that I could drive in the city, on the highway, over craters of New Delhi and into waterlogged roads of Gurgaon without compromising on maneuverability, mileage, ground clearance and comfort and I do all of that with this car. The Hyryder is very good at doing a lot of these different things and that's something that as you progress into the car world, you generally have to accept that its either going to be a good car to run up a mountain or crawl through narrow roads of Lajpat Nagar market. I sort of refused to accept that there are no cars that can manage all of my requirements but the good people at Toyota heard my thoughts and prayers and they did whatever they could to make this car streetable yet travel hundreds of kilometers without breaking a sweat and your wallet. Chapter 1: No Country for Old Sedans The market and roads are being dominated by cSUV's. Owning and driving the Fortuner, I believed that these cSUVs aren't real SUVs, "pseudo SUVs" if you will, but they work better in daily-ing scenarios. So do I now believe that they're real SUVs? No. But credit where it's due, they get the job done without the price tag of a real SUV. Low maintenance, relatively affordable, feature rich and high GC helps to anticipate traffic flow. People buy these cars to compensate for the government's incompetence to build decent road infrastructure and streamline the traffic flow. Even ...

2 days with Toyota Hyryder: Honda City owner shares 12 observations

BHPian Audik75 recently shared this with other enthusiasts. My initial ownership review after 2 days of driving the Hyryder I have been in the market for a car to replace an ageing Wagon-R for over 20 months and considered multiple cars before taking the leap of faith on the Hyryder. I have followed My considerations were • Jeep Compass 2021 facelift: liked the Jeep but the steep price of 34L on-road for the S-variant (and an automatic transmission that didn’t seem the best mating for the engine) held me back. • Tata Harrier: still in love with it. The lack of features (several of which have now crept into it through the multiple launches) that the Nexon / Safari had and the Hydraulic steering with poor calibration held me back. • Maruti Brezza: Booked the new Brezza on launch but ended up cancelling it as I read reviews about the K15C engine performance. While it did largely meet my use cases at 17.3L, I felt it was overpriced compared to the outgoing version and no longer the value buy. I did not consider the Korean twins (safety perception) or the German ones (multiple issues owners have reported post-launch and the compact SUVs appearing more like a large hatchback- no offence to owners). Didn’t consider Mahindra given the waiting time for their SUVs albeit I could have planned this given how long I waited to actually buy. With other options largely being ruled out and the inertia post-COVID drawing to a close, I ended up booking the Hyryder on launch day expecting its...

Hycross, Hyryder may drive Toyota sales in 2023

“Auto industry and India’s economic outlook looks positive in 2023. We expected demand to remain robust. Add to it, our newly launched Innova Hycross and Hyryder have received an overwhelming response. They will definitely add to the total sales,” Vikram Gulati, Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s country head and senior vice-president of corporate affairs told this newspaper at the sidelines of Auto Expo 2023. Toyota showcased several alternative fuel vehicles, including its first all-electric SUV – the bZ4X at the Expo. The company also showcased cars and SUVs that can run on hydrogen and ethanol. While Gulati didn’t share the pending order of the two models that also come with strong hybrid options, dealerships informed that the two models have a waiting period of up to 6 months. “Right now our priority is to ramp up production and deliver them to consumers,” said Gulati, adding that while supply chain issues still persist, the situation is much better now. He also said that as the supply situation is improving, the brand will soon recommence the booking of Innova Crysta diesel variant. When asked if Innova Hycross would not cannibalise Innova Crysta as it provides a better fuel economy and is loaded with latest features, Gulati said the market is big enough to accommodate different power trains. Gulati noted TKM’s aggressive push for strong hybrids is paving the path towards electrification and decarbonisation even as rival carmakers such as Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and H...
