The Karnataka state government announced the move of offering 50 per cent discount in an effort to clear backlogged cases. (Representational Image) New Delhi: In a one-time offer, Karnataka has announced 50 per cent rebate on fines for pending traffic challan cases. This offer ends on February 11. The order was issued by Under Secretary Transport Department Pushpa VS. “Outstanding Traffic Fines amount with 50% discount has been operationalized. Request all to please utilize this opportunity & pay all your pending traffic fines. You can view and pay fine @ KarnatakaOne website, #PayTM App or by visiting the nearest #Traffic Police stations,” the Bengaluru Traffic Police said in its official Twitter handle. Dr. M.A. Saleem, Special Commissioner (Traffic), Bengaluru, said over 80 per cent cases were pending across the state. There were over two crore e-challan cases which may total up to a penalty of Rs 500 crore in the city, Saleem was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

The state transport department as a one-time measure offered a 50% discount to violators on Thursday, after it held a meeting chaired by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority (KSLSA) in January. A similar offer was given by the Hyderabad traffic police in 2022 and it turned out to be a huge success in collecting the pending fines from violators.

The decision was based on the recommendation of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority. The authority, in its meeting on February 14, had resolved the extend the discount for 15 more days following which the Transport Department issued fresh orders on Friday, extending the benefit.
