Poor roads lead to traffic jams, force a Patna school to close for three days

A school in Patna was forced to shut down for three days after students failed to reach the school due to regular, long hours of traffic jams, officials said on Thursday. Authorities of St Joseph Convent High School in Jethuli on the outskirts of Patna decided to close the school till Saturday in view of unprecedented traffic jam, which the authorities said is not new to the place. "Traffic jam forced us to close school because students coming from different localities were facing difficulties in reaching the school. Now school will re-open on Monday," the school principal said. The principal said the school begins at 7.15 am, but students failed to arrive even till 11.30 am on Wednesday as buses were stuck in a jam for hours. "We ordered bus drivers to take the students back to their homes," she said. On Tuesday, students reached their homes after 5 pm even though they left the school at 12.10 pm. "It is hell like situation due to the traffic jam on Patna bypass that connects a road to school. When the bus gets stuck in jam for hours, the students start crying," said the driver of a bus. Traffic officials said the jams on highways connecting Patna with neighbouring areas have now become a regular affair. An official said the traffic police will take some immediate measures to ensure that school students are not held up in long traffic jams. Not only the school buses, the traffic jams also delay ambulances carrying patients to various hospitals in Patna. (This story has no...

Traffic Jam, Illegal Parkingperennial Problems In City

The situation worsens, especially during afternoon and evening hours when school buses transport kids back home and office-goers return from workplaces. Apart from traffic snarls, the chaotic parking often leads to scuffle between motorists. Several people complained that the traffic police seldom deal sternly with the offenders or regulate traffic on narrow roads, especially where construction work has been going on. Abhilash Kumar, a resident of Kadamkuan, complained, “There is extremely little space for motorists because cars are parked on both sides of the road, resulting in massive traffic congestion on Ashok Rajpath. The two-lane road has already been reduced to one due to ongoing construction of double-decker flyover and metro station. Despite that, autorickshaws, e-rickshaws and buses stop in the middle of the road to take or drop passengers.” A resident of Ramna Road, Mohit Aggarwal said it took him almost one and a half hours to reach home from workplace at Boring Canal Road. “The traffic movement is almost paralysed on all major roads during the evening hours. Traffic moves at a snail’s pace near Gandhi Maidan, Ashok Rajpath, Fraser Road, Bailey Road and Langar Toli. Illegal parking and wrong-side driving are two major reasons behind traffic jam,” he said. Many schoolchildren also suffer as their school buses, vans and autos are often stuck in the traffic congestion in Patliputra, Ashiana, Digha, Ashok Rajpath, Boring Road, Kankarbagh and bypass areas. Protest marches were carried out at Gandhi Maidan, Dak Bungalow crossing, Patna Junction roundabout, Patna City, Chitkohra, Gaighat, Agamkuan, Phulwarisharif roundabout, Mokama, Paliganj, Danapur, Barh and Didarganj. Protesting drivers were seen pulling autos with rope and bamboo sticks. They said the state government should issue new permit for urban areas and stop harassing drivers and collecting fine in the name of Motor Vehicles Act. Raj Kumar Jha, general secretary of All India Road Transport Workers' Federation- Bihar, said around 42,000 autos and 28,000 e-rickshaws remained off the roads. "Even some private bus operators also joined the protest. We are on strike to protest the high-handedness of the traffic police against auto and e-rickshaw drivers. We also want the transport department to roll back its decision to fix route for public transport," he said. Transport minister Sheela Kumari said the decision to fix auto and e-rickshaw routes was taken to decongest the roads, so that the people will not face the heavy traffic rush. "Due to haphazard parking and increasing number of public vehicles on major routes, people are facing traffic jam. Everyone should come forward and contribute to this initiative. What we are doing is for the people's interest and the three-wheelers will have to follow the rule to ensure that others do not face the problem while commuting in the city," she said. Kumari added, "Solution to any problem is found by talking, not by protesting or...
