Traffic movement resumes on Jammu

The traffic movement on 247km-long Jammu-Srinagar national highway was restored on Wednesday after two back-to-back landslides had hit Seri area killing a crane operator besides injuring seven others on Tuesday. The affected stretch was restored on Tuesday evening and thereafter stranded vehicles were cleared. (ANI file image) The highway is the only all-weather surface link that connects Kashmir with other parts of the country. He informed that heavy motor vehicles carrying essentials were also allowed from Jammu on Wednesday morning. On Tuesday afternoon, a crane driver was killed while seven others including six members of a family from Rajouri were injured when two vehicles came under the landslide at Seri village near Ramban town around 1:30pm on Tuesday. It was followed by another landslide at the same stretch after which the national highway was blocked completely.

Following incessant rains mud and landslide at Dalwass narrowed road stretches, mud, and slush has compounded the problem causing inconvenience to commuters and vehicle operators for the last many days. Traffic authorities said during the last 24 hours up to 5 pm, Sunday on highway remained blocked for 14 hours and 46 minutes. They said the highway remained blocked for 10 hours and ten hours and 17 minutes due to the closure of the Chenani-Nashri tunnel and for four hours and 29 minutes due to road restoration work at Dalwass near Nashri. They further said movement of traffic remains slow at various places between Nashri and Banihal tunnels due to the breakdown of eight heavy Vehicles and on foot movement of nomads and their livestock. Due to the closure of the Chenani Nashri tunnel hundreds of vehicles remained stranded after intervals at various places between Udhampur and Chenani and other places. Commuters and vehicle operators complained that they faced problems and difficulties as they remained stuck for hours together in long queues between Chenani and Udhampur and Nashri and Chanderkote. Ramban/Jammu, Jun 10 (PTI) Vehicular movement on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was restored on Saturday, after remaining suspended for nearly 12 hours due to repair and maintenance works on the stretch between the Nashri and Navyug tunnels, officials said. The works on the 270-km road were undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India following a landslide, they said. The road was closed around 10 pm on Friday at Dalwas and several other locations in Ramban district for carrying out the repair and maintenance works, Senior Superintendent of Police, National Highway, Rohit Baskotra said. "Debris from the landslide was cleared, the slide prone area stabilised and potholes were filled up during the overnight operation," Baskotra, who along with senior NHAI officers inspected the works, told PTI. He said the highway was opened for traffic from both sides after nearly 12 hours. "Commuters have been advised to follow lane discipline," Baskotra said. On traffic jams on the highway and complaints by commuters about it, officials said authorities have recognised the need for immediate measures to control congestion in the Ramban-Banihal sector, particularly in view of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage that starts on July 1.
