South America

Caatinga (white forest) refers to the generally stunted, somewhat sparse, and often thorny vegetation of the dry interior of northeastern catingueiras ( Caesalpinia), juremas ( Mimosa), and joazeiros ( Zizyphus joaseiro), members of the Euphorbiaceae (spurge) family, and Bombacaceae (a family of tropical trees with palmate leaves and large, dry or fleshy fruit). Undergrowth consists of thickets, bromeliads (plants with basal, often spiny leaves), and innumerable cacti, among which is the xiquexique ( Cereus gounellei), the complicated intertwinings of which cover the soil. Where more water is available, caatinga species may grow 30 feet (9 metres) high and form impenetrable thickets. South Brazilian forests Those parklike forests, sometimes very dense but interspersed with savanna, occupy Notable is the araucaria, or Araucaria angustifolia), forest region, between the Ilex paraguariensis), from which the beverage Xerophytic associations Thickets of small trees and shrubs, often thorny, among which species of Prosopis, Acacia, and Mimosa predominate, cover regions that In Peru that association borders the coastal desert, which extends from northern Peru to northern lomas (a mix of grasses and other herbaceous species), to grow for a short period of time. Subantarctic rainforests Mountain vegetation In the high Andes, a temperate zone extends from the upper limit of the subtropical rainforest (about 6,000 feet [1,800 metres]) up to the lower limit of the Andean meadows, at a...

22.4: Tropical Deciduous Forest

\( \newcommand\) • • • Learning Objective Recognize distinguishing characteristics of tropical deciduous rainforests & plant adaptations of the biome. This biome is distinguished by seasonal rainfall and a constant warm temperature throughout the year. There are two seasons in this biome, are often referred to as the dry season (with no tolittle rain) and the wet season (with heavy rain). This biome receives up to 80inches of rain per year and temperatures range between68°F to 77°F. One would find this biome on the north and south ends of tropical rainforests, generally between 10° and 20°. Parts of South America, including parts of amazon andsouthern Mexico, as well as parts of south east Asia and India contain tropical deciduous forests. This biome is also sometimes called Monsoon forest or mixed deciduous forest, depending on its location and slight variations. Figure \(\PageIndex\): Cat Tien National Park in Vietnam showing tropical deciduous forest in the early dry season. (credit: Adaptations Though there is less biodiversity in this biome than tropical rainforests, there arestill a large number of species, including many endemic species that reside here. Deciduous trees lose their leaves during the dry season and re-grow them during the rainy season. This allows the plants to save energy when liquid water is not as available. During the rainy season, the forestis lush and full of foliage, whereas the dry season creates an open canopy, allowing plants under the canopy...

Alamos Vegetation

Research and Conservation in Southern Sonora, Mexico Vegetation of the Alamos Region - Map and Virtual Tour Plants live in climate zones suitable for their physiological adaptations, and live in vegetation types in distinct bands or zones. Rainfall increases with elevation while temperature decreases. General zonation patterns are easily seen with desertscrub and tropical communities in lower, hotter, drier areas, and temperate grassland, chaparral, and woodlands and forests in higher, colder, wetter areas. However, the elevational limits of vegetation zones are only general, and are strongly influenced by complex topography, and less so by unusual geologic substrates. In southern Sonora major elevation-related changes in vegetation are easily seen from the Gulf of California inland to Alamos and up into the Sierra Madre Occidental (this chapter), and along MEX 16 from northwest of Tepoca to the Chihuahua border (Friedman 1996, Martin et al. 1998, Van Devender et al. 2002, Van Devender et al. 2005). Coastal thornscrub covers the coastal plain while foothills thornscrub ( matorral espinoso) occurs on rocky slopes up to about 650-985 ft (200-300 m) elevation alon...

Tropical Deciduous Forests: Characteristics, Types in India

Tropical Deciduous Forests grow in areas with significant annual rainfall followed by a distinct dry season. These forest formations are dense and lush during the wet summers, but when most trees lose their leaves during the dry winters, they turn into a barren scene. During the dry seasons, trees consume subsurface water. The plants and animals in this ecosystem are greatly impacted by these abrupt shifts in water availability. During a drought, many trees in deciduous woods lose their leaves, whereas trees in moister areas with access to groundwater typically stay evergreen. This article will cover all the major aspects of the Tropical Deciduous Forests in India, along with their characteristics and types. Tropical Deciduous Forest Monsoon forests, often called Tropical Deciduous Forests, are found in warm climates with annual rainfall totals of up to several hundred cm. These woods have extensive dry seasons that can last for several months and vary according to the location while being found in warm, all-year-round climates that periodically receive several hundred millimetres of rain. ☛ In general, tropical deciduous forests can be found in two locations: first between 10° and 20°N latitude and the other between 10° and 20°S latitude. These locations are in drier areas north and south of the tropical rainforest belt and south or north of subtropical deserts. ☛ The sensitivity of tropical deciduous forests includes: • Overgrazing • Exotic species • Excessive burning • ...

Tropical Deciduous Forests

The earth is made up of flora and Fauna, both are interdependent on each other. Flora is a different type of vegetation found on earth, depending on altitude, climate, moisture, slope, and thickness of soil. Fauna includes a large diversity of wildlife. The wildlife is usually isolated from my contact and it includes animals, birds, insects, etc. that belong to a particular region. India is considered one of the 12 mega biodiversity countries of the world. India is very rich and its Flora has approximately 47000 plant species. The community of plants that have grown without any help from mankind is called natural vegetation. Natural vegetation is also well known as virgin vegetation as no one interferes in its growth. Like fauna, India is also very rich in its flora. It consists of 90000 species of animals, and 2000 specials of birds. The vast vegetation found is the energy source for wildlife. The vegetation is also dependent on wildlife for the nutrients required for their growth. When the animals die and decay, the soil becomes rich in minerals. The Tropical Deciduous Forest The Indian vegetation is mostly consisting of tropical deciduous forests. These forests are found in regions receiving rainfall between 200 cm and 70 cm. The tropical deciduous forests shed their leaves for about 1.5 to 2 months before winter. Some evergreen trees retain their leaves throughout the year. Deciduous forests are having different varieties of trees. The type of trees found in deciduous ...
